This is a cool idea, I couldn't get past the first lava jump though :(. Maybe because of the tricky controls, the levels need to be really friendly to keep it fun for longer. very creative idea though.
Side notes:
I think your character sprite is being filtered whereas your environment art isn't..
also, snap on the mouse pointers ;) .
Thanks for playing and the feedback. I'll try to change the character's appearance with your tip. :)
And for the first lava jump you basically have to press space 8 times in a row as the game doesnt detect a fifth press but will just detect the 5th to 8th press as seperate jump input. So if you ever want to give it another try that might be helpful.
Ah ok, I'll have another go! I did have one more thought, which was maybe you could shuffle the button presses around so that jump (heavily timing based) was on the one or two presses? nice one :)
Yea got that idea multiple times. I thought about it at first but left it as is. If I should ever come back to the project and add more levels and stuff I'll probably change the controls so it's a bit easier to play.
That was a really hard game haha, very creative though.
Thanks for playing. Didn't appear to me as very hard but that happens to me all the time, especially when i played mario maker a lot. I always underestimate my games/levels.
I think the biggest problem was, with platforms, you need to time jumps at the edge, but for this you need to do it with enough time to get 4 taps in. Took me a few tries to get past the lava both times. Maybe you could switch the 4 taps for something less used like direction change or stop, or use a long press instead?
Yea thought about that. If i should decide to come back and add more levels to the game i'll do it to improve the experience
You are correct. Even I felt that 4 tap was a too much for me. But I think I got luck with the lava stage. 😆
The general consensus is:
You have a higher skill-level than an average player.
Maybe but it#s probably because i playtest my games and stuff so often that i can one shot everything. It's funny how fast you learn a specific setup or anything like that if you play it while building.
Yes. Playtesting your own games raises your skill level. Therefore, you generally want to make it harder for yourself and tend to forget that you're releasing to people who haven't reached your level yet. I initially made that mistake before releasing my first game on itch.io.
I personally have no advice to give you here. Nothing's intrinsically wrong with your game anyway (especially with the Jam's constraints). The fact that you test it shows that it can be done. It's just a call for players to get better at it.
I really quiet liked the style and the art of the game. At first the controlls were hard to understand but it came with the time. Verry nice.
Thanks for playing. And for the Art check the credits tab in the main menu as I used art by 3 amazing artists from itch.io.
Very nice platformer!
I liked the graphics details very much!
The jump control is indeed the most difficult to control. I wasn't able to complete the game but I'll give it another try!
And yes, adding some background music and sounds would be the cherry on the cake :)
Thanks for playing and the feedback. The art was made by 3 amazing artists I found on itch check the credits tab in the game's menu for their names. Still hope to be adding some music in the future and maybe also some more content like more levels.
I also hope you are able to beat the game on your next try. I believe you can :)
Nice game. It is difficult for me to even imagine creating a 2D platformer with just one button. But you executed it perfectly. Some jumps are hard but totally satisfying when completed. Only major missing is soundtrack. A nice background music will be better. I think after this jam you should continue working on this. 🙂 It felt good to complete all the levels.
All the best for future jams!
Thanks for the kind words. Really appreciate you playing. And yea I most certainly will come back at some point in the future maybe adding some more levels and definetly some sound effects and music.
