  • A wonderful game, would like more ingredients and mixing. The timer felt really fast to me. A difficulty slider would be nice for people not so good to have more time to play <3
  • Love the art style! Would love to hear more audio for the game and more animations for the enemies. The goal of the game is also not very well explained. The timer ticking down is more of a nuisance that rushes the player to explore rather than allowing the player to enjoy the game at their own pace. Good work, keep it up!

Seriously... did you include your Game Design Document?
Yes

Is your game set to Public so we can see it?
Yes

Tell us about your game!
The main mechanics are simple combat, and plant collection whilst racing the clock to escape the Hazy Everglades. Navigate through twisted tree-lines and overgrown thorns with multiple options for movement, including an empowered jump to help your little legs. The bar at the top of the screen is your exposure to the elements that bridge the mortal and spirit realm of the Everglades, and is harmful to living beings such as yourself. Add the plants you need to your flask as you need them, and drink your problems away! I promise there's no side effects~

The Hazy Everglades is actually a location for a much bigger game I started January this year called Binding Light! Luca, the playable character here in "Kitsune Steps" will be one of the playable characters as well. I do plan for it to be a large, several year project, but I do feel even more ready to take it on now ^^

Desc. of Controls (In case in-game is hard to understand <3)

A & D: Move left and right
Shift: Dash/Dodge; Gives I-Frames
Space: Jump. If held while in air, allows you to hover
Q: Empowers the next input jump to go extra high
LClick: Basic 3-hit attack combo. Can be done in air as well, but must land again to repeat combo
RClick: Consume Mana to shoot a fireball
1: Add berries to flask; Heals exposure to the Everglades
2: Add spice to flask; Heals health
3: Add mint to flask; Restores mana
E: Use flask; Does NOT consume plants that have not been manually added to flask
F: Interact with shrines to teleport between them

Extra Notes
While I did start developing a different game early January this year, this is my first actual game I have ever made, and it gave me a lot more confidence in what I'm doing. I've been doing art since 2012, and somewhat recently had drive to want to do more and keep learning. Game dev is extremely fun and rewarding, and I can't thank you enough for inspiring myself, and many others, with everything you do <3

This is a really great game. The mobility options you have felt quite nice. Art and Music made the game feel very cozy and laid back. I vibe with it while playing.  Simple controls and easy to pick-up. I can see this game would be really fun to speed run.

Little bit of feedback:

  • I was caught off guard by the water and I thought it was floor. The color is similar to each other. Making it a much brighter shade or a different color will help distinguish the two
  • Button inputs could be set to the keyboard instead of the mouse click, makes it easier to have the potions and actions on one hand. (Maybe UIO for potions, J for empower, K for dash and L for Attack)
  • SFX would add a nice to touch to the game

Great job for a first-time game!

I like the atmosphere and the art here! I would suggest to fix the controls to maybe copy the button mapping of other similar games, I think using something more standard would help a lot.

Great start though, I hope you keep working on this!

Well done! Graphics look great and movement feels good, although I'm not a great fan of using Q while moving. It also could give better feedback when taking damage (took me a while to figure out that blue sparkles are not a good sign) :D Anyway, great game for a start. Keep it up, kitsune!

Great graphics & fitting music. Fun game, I liked it.

The controls & animations could be improved to have a smoother experience.
Some enemy movement would add to the challenge.

This is great! I like the mobility options, the dash and the bounce when you hit enemies feels really good, The level design uses the mobility options well and is fun to traverse, and I love the way the game looks. This is pretty good for a first game (this jam is also the first game I'm uploading lol), and I can't wait to see how Binding Light turns out!

Thank you a ton!!
Just got done playing your game as well- Simple, but fun! Reminds me of old flash games I used to play in school <3
And I can't wait to share more for Binding Light! Will be a long while until it's even released, but I'll try and keep up with posting about it on my socials~
