  • A frustratingly challenging game that I am sure appeals to some people. For me I am uncertain why you would choose X, C, V as your controls, but that could just be my muscle memory working against me. I feel using A, S, D might work better as the position of the hand is more comfortable and doesn't feel awkward. Aside from that the gameplay is fun, if not frustrating. However, outside the use of the sun/shade mechanic, there wasn't a direct implementation of the theme. I understand the intent of the GDD, but by playing the game it was not apparent. Overall this is a solid game. Good job.

Tell us about your game!
Nature Dash is an auto-run platformer in which a little bud named Silverleaf survives the hazardous future relying on the shade rather than the sun while finding water before drying out.

The game takes inspiration from games like Geometry Dash and Jetpack Joyride, but with a twist: instead of just jumping, you have other actions to take in fast reaction to get your character to safety.

Extra Notes
Hi! I'm a solo dev based in Madrid, Spain.

I have tiny experience - just a few months ago I started undertaking The Challenge and built the first two games on my free time.
I had great expectations for this Game Jam but sadly I couldn't dedicate as much time as I expected. Nevertheless I'm really proud of what I accomplished given the time dedicated and my previous abilities. I learnt a LOT about Aseprite and Godot in my time working for the Game Jam.
Sadly I didn't have time to dedicate to music so I ended up using royalty free tunes I found online - I made extra sure that they were not copyrighted.
Also the only assets i did not draw are the woods at end of each level - courtesy of https://brullov.itch.io/oak-woods?download - here the license allows use in free and commercial projects.

Thanks a lot for reviewing and hope you have a great day!

Good tie into the theme, challenging mechanics, and a solid foundation to continue to build on.

One thing I learned during this jam is that there are lots of QoL "features" in popular games we all play that we take for granted, like the second where you float and have a chance to get a jump off before you plummet to your death. I think  it's referred to as the "coyote time" phenomenon. Likewise, I think a little leeway on the transitions between abilities would go a long way with players.

Congrats on the fantastic submission.

You are completely right. Coyote time is the seconds from a ledge that you still can jump - there is also another one that i'd have liked to implement called jump buffering - that's when you want to jump continuously, so the game considers your jump button press even when you're still on the air (a few miliseconds before touching the ground from a previous jump).
Those are two things that I already set on learning how to implement efficiently to have under my belt for whenever I want/need to build another platformer.

Thanks a lot for reviewing! And the feedback for the transitions between abilites is completely on point here.
Thank you also for the kind words! It means a lot.

It seems like a good game loop and I like the visuals but the sound seems to be your downfall. The in game audio is a bit crackling and the sound for the text at the beginning is just trying to repeat for every letter that goes in.

Otherwise great work on having it work correctly in a browser.

Developer

I can totally agree that sound is the least taken care aspect - I'm no expert around sound and i rushed stuff around it. That being said - I did not add sound for the text at the beginning... that sounds weird. Can I ask you what OS and browser? So I can playtest and learn from it :)
Thanks a lot for taking the time of playing and leaving a comment!

A fun little auto-running game that I unfortunately couldn't' get very far in.

I'm not sure if it's a bug or not but when trying to use the cover it kept turning on and off really quickly rather than stay covered. It killed me a ton, sometimes it worked but most of the time it didn't.

It's really tricky to try and use only 1 function at a time, I'm not really sure of the design choice to make it this way. I almost immediately stopped bothering with the vine cos you could just jump into the water which seemed like the better choice, not that it helped me get very far anyways.

The random green things flying at me combined with being burned in the sun immediately followed by running into a treannat (I think?) meant a swift death for me almost every time.

A cute little dude in very difficult and hostile world for sure.
