  • This game is beautiful, and is a great adaptation of the theme of "You Are The Weapon." As the titular vessel of weaponry Knight Alpha 01, assisting your pilot to keep them in a calm emotional state is a fun way of interacting that helps make the game feel more compelling. Especially fun is the ability to influence the pilot's emotional state to make the game more or less challenging. The reloading minigames are fun to manage, and not punishing. The art is clean, clear, and consistent within the style choice. The story is also compelling, though short. The UI is well laid out and easy to understand, and is very easy to read. One suggestion I have is to make the Laser Shotgun reloading minigame a bit more visually indicative of when the Laser Shotgun is reloaded. Your GDD is well laid out, and I like seeing that you have your different developer roles listed by name. However, you should include all the people in your group in the submission of your game on itch.io: the artist should also be a part of that team. Otherwise, your GDD is very well done, and very descriptive. I would like to see more inspiration for stylistic and musical choices in the game. Overall, excellent job!

Heart of Steel is a 2D arcade shooter where players control a sentient mech, Knight Alpha 01, which must navigate the unstable emotions of its pilot while defending the city from waves of enemies. Players balance combat efficiency with emotional management to succeed.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
Knight Alpha 01 and its Pilot operate as a single weapon. Success hinges on the Player’s ability to balance combat precision with emotional stability. By making the Player the mech instead of the Pilot, the game. By taking the agency of aim away from the Player, they are only in charge of firing and reloading the weapons. Because the success of the Player in combat depends on their choice for the Pilot’s emotional dialogue, it really feels like the Player and the Pilot are linked. Furthermore, the Player’s agency is also limited in how they communicate with the Pilot. This adds to the feeling of being a mute weapon, forced to use alternative means to establish a real connection. In the end, the sacrifice they make is something they choose to do together. Despite only being seen as a weapon at first, they end the game as a team.

Very cool! Only feedback I have is that the shotgun reload kept getting stuck to my mouse after reloading

I love the world-building, the setting feels fresh but nostalgic all at once, somehow?! Dialogue and sound design really works together to establish the vibe. Great entry, good work by everyone on the team.

Good submission! The UI is done well and the art is extremely polished. The gameplay could have had a bit more depth, but it was alright. Also great dialogue!
