  • It's a really fun one! Great, simple art style, fun gameplay, simple, yet fun sounds and I really love the Wild West music choice for this, it's really fitting! I would love to see a way to rearrange the train cars, I found out a bit too late just how good the tesla cannons were and wanted to move some to the front, the game would not let me. The UI could also use some polishing. Some buttons have too small of a hitbox and some seem to have a bit too large of a hitbox. The upgrades in the shop also keep rearranging, which is not helpful when I want to basically make a glass cannon really quickly. There should also be an option to repair all cars or sell the ones you are not using. The game is fantastic fun, just needs a few polishes. I will be returning to play this more, for sure!

Description:
Build and control a weaponized train. Build and upgrade weapon cars to extend your train while shooting enemies and destroying the environment to unlock new locations to collect resources from. Fight your way back to the station with your resources to empower your deadly train on its endless loop of destruction.

Controls:
Left click to shoot. Scroll wheel to zoom in/out. Left click buttons in train station menu to buy train cars and upgrades.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
You are a weaponized train of destruction. Instead of the dynamic of a survivors-like game where the player can only control movement while the weapons control themselves, in Off The Rails Gunner you control every aspect of the weapons and none of the movement.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
The balance of buying more train cars to deal more damage but also having a longer train leaves you more exposed.

I love this! Always want to play a game about armored trains! This makes me really want to make such a game too! I love the idea, the chaotic gameplay, and that music matches so nicely with the game too! Very well done!

So for a bit of feedback I feels like not being able to rearrange the train, and also that unlimited length was very game breaking. By spamming electric carriage the game will be won very easily. You could do stuff like making train length an upgrade of the locomotive etc, would makes the game a bit more harder and more strategic. Another big issue was the upgrade reordered each time one is bought. Although its a nice feature getting the cheapest on the left it really makes the whole upgrading experience worse in my opinion, and I just brainless press the cheapest upgrade every time halfway through the game. Also and not least, the final boss feels really underwhelming. Probably it's not even moving make it not feel like a final boss at all.

This is great. I really like the reverse tower defense schtick. I also really liked unlocking the additional routes by blowing up the icebergs.


When I got a longer  train I really wanted a "repair all" button. I would also have liked to be able to reorder the cars. It felt like the balance was a bit off, I don't think there was any reason to buy anything but the drone launchers and maybe the area effect fire after the first loop.

That was great, I felt like the weapon. I feel like the hits could use a bit more punchiness to them, more feedback. The upgrade system is satisfying. If you get too many cars though, the camera does not like it. The extra track paths is a great idea, although it seems to lengthen the time it takes to get to the station? Maybe it should unlock something if you travel through an alternate path. Keep on working on it!

Absolutely awesome game! The train upgrade system is insanely fun—felt like assembling a rolling doomsday machine, and I loved it. Would be great to have auto-firing wagons with unique passive effects, adding more strategic firepower. I did miss a volume slider—had to nuke the sound from orbit (browser settings saved the day). With a few new wagon types, a visual refresh, and some killer music, this could easily go nuclear on the Play Market charts!

My train got so big it collided with itself! xd

Still I "Stayed on the rails!" in the end :P

Really fun concept! Only had issues with the SFX popping my speakers constantly.

And camera not seeing my train anymore, but that last one is partly due to my shinanigans!
