Is there any limit to the number of shapes per object, like there is for the sprites? Also, does it need to be exactly cubes and spheres? Is it allowed to stretch the cubes into parallelepipeds and use elongated spheres, for instance?

Yes there is a shape limit for per object like sprites. Yes you can elongate shapes as well.
