I didn't get the theme that well, but from your comments, I see it was the "hara-kiri" theme. lol. (I should've picked that when I jumped into the fire to proceed to level 2). It was really challenging for me, my directional keys took a beating. :-) Nice retro color theme but the retro music choice could be better ;-)

Once I realised what to do, I actually had some good fun with it! A clear HOW TO PLAY section would've been handy. :D

Good

Nice art style
Solid controls
Great that you allowed us to turn off the music :)

Area of improvement

The music was not good
No UI - I have no idea what to do
The goal of the game is unclear, I had to read the comments for it to make sense

Ohhh after the reading the comments, I didn't realize that we had to find a way to die. I did find some fire, but I thought it was bad aha.

Idk. Ok no just kidding ,but a theme can be interpret differently and so i thought that try to die instead to survive is reversed roles. I guess.

To find a way to die! At the end of the course you alwas find some fire or things like that.
