Things I liked about the game:
Things I didn't like:
Thanks for the heads up! I guess that's something to learn for when we make a longer non-jam version of Skybound Dreamers! We tried to emulate bits and pieces of Ace Attorney without copying it 100% so the feedback of figuring out when to introduce evidence is pretty useful.
REALLY fun! I've never played an Ace Attorney game so this was an adventure. Wasn't sure what to expect. I think it clicked better after i watched Hawk stream it. With lots of characters and words I get a little lost in the sauce. And there's loads of references to, I guess, Hawk streamer lore haha. So watching him play REALLY helped with understanding that too.
But otherwise, the dialogue was smartly written, the art is BEAUTIFUL. It has such vibrancy and texture. I love how every character really sticks out and yet it all feels cohesive. That's hard!! So really good job! It reminds me of the vibe of The Fifth Element, almost a futuristic/alien pinup style. Really cool!!
Why thank you! I actually REALLY love the Fifth Element and science fiction space operas with that energy so your comparison was a wonderful compliment! I planned to make a space-faring game with a similar vibe since that and sci-fi anime like Tenchi Muyo!, Cyborg 009 and Outlaw Star were content I was growing up with on Toonami. When Hawk explained why he set up this Game Jam, I knew I wanted to make this scream 90's anime through an Adult Swim lens!
And like I said, Berry and I got into HawkZombie around similar times so it felt like it would make more sense we worked together and make something meme-worthy based on what we both see in his streams.
Two words for this game. Holy. Shit. Berry and Honeynut, you seriously did great work here. I loved the trial and laughed myself silly during a good part of it. Great job. I wish there was more to it but I also know this is a prototype. The fact that you left me really wishing for more speaks to how great this is going to be when it's fully fleshed out. I loved that you presented just ENOUGH of a challenge that it wasn't hard to figure out, but it wasn't "this is so easy a dummy can do it" either. As someone who loves Ace Attorney and who likes piecing together evidence during murder mysteries, this did a very good job of relieving that itch. Seriously, good job. I'll be shocked if this doesn't make first place in at least one category.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for playing. I did most of the writing and during a bad mood of my life so I'm glad I was able to bring enough joy to the experience.
5 star!!! Amazing art work and the game is so fun. Love trial type stuff btw. Only thing I would note I said on hiddeones too, sometimes a large cast is hard for jams specifcally, and I love how lively the characters are. But in a game like danganronpa you have time to get to know them, it would have been impossible for the jam. But sometimes I felt like there were so many like...inside jokes or side convos that I either wasn't following, or how do I put it...it feels like when a group of friends are having a conversation in front of you and are happy and having fun but are leaving you out of it, and you want to be involved but you can't. xD It feels like we are supposed to know a lot more about the characters when we don't, just by the way the writing and dialogue is. It just might help in the future to note the players might be entirely new to the characters and not know a thing about them, doesn't mean we have to know their lives story, but some little notes of some background we can follow helps. But this often happens when large casts of characters are introduced quickly, especially ones that already know eachother, and there isn't slow little hints about how they knew eachother or the background or the world etc. Little notes like knowing the father of the girl there, was helpful, for instance. Even some subtle narration at the beginning, not LONG per say, but a short 'we've known eachother for some time, etc etc, a little about the world.' not super long bc you wat to get in the meat of the game but enough to follow, or even some narration in between dialogue like, idk if that makes any sense xD
It feels a little rocky I would agree. Unlike the HawkZombie Bookstore MURDER though, the criticism is VERY valid here seeing it's our very first time introducing the girls here. Fortunately there are plans to make a longer version of this game possibly with a beginning introducing the girls. I still don't quite follow on the inside jokes from your comment on the HawkZombie Bookstore MURDER but I do quite get the inside joke thing here in this game since Berry and I started RPGMaker Game Dev work around the same time (2019) and for a while Berry was one of my big critics. I used to get antsy when he reviews my games and now that we worked together on something I think the fact we've gotten this close might have the 'inside joke' feel.
It's more of when the characters are making little jokes amongst themselves and it feels out of left feel or like an i don't get it or did I miss something but I am autistic so it might legit be an autism thing. But I even told hawk if I joined a jam it would be so hard to do a mystery thing like this bc usually we have MORE time with the characters, I'd never base a rating off of a vibe or a preference, it's still 5 star and I love it dw dw it did not affect score I was honestly wondering if It was just me or if anyone else felt that way bc I might just be crazy fr xD
I am on the spectrum too. I am certain it isn't a 'You' thing at all. I think for me I feel the same way over other indie comedy games, especially if it's referencial rumor. I actually struggle with comedy and do genuinely try to study it (there was even a class about it I took back in college.)
Also it is okay to rate based on vibes. I actually tend to do that because I am actually pretty judgy as Hell. Though luckily none of these games gave me bad vibes so giving them a chance is nice! Glad you gave mine a chance despite the room being spooky.
I know. That's why this is more of a prototype than the real deal. To be honest, this is probably a bit less of a bloat than Honeynut's other entries where she introduced 10 characters all at once and I start having whiplash on keeping track who is who.
That's true. I think the game currently with the least amount of characters introduced at once is funnily enough Ava's Spiritual Guidance. That showed a good example of sprinkling characters in slowly into the story even if it was just to make a nod to the small cast found in ZedTechnician's games.
Omgggg! I was so excited when I saw two amazing artists & dev made a collab project for this jam! So DL'd and played immediately, and oh myyy! Immediately loved all the arts, the VN system, so much cool custom stuff graphics-wise <3 And the investigation, the trial testimonies, and the characters were so fun! I especially loved the defendant she's so funny xD :D And ohhhh! That twist at the end hihih! Love it! Such a great entry by Berry and HoneyNut! <3 Best wishes on the jam! ^_^
Dude same the combo got me so hype
