Judge feedback

Judge feedback is anonymous and shown in a random order.

  • I will be posting a comprehensive YouTube video of my multiple playthroughs and feedback soon. https://www.youtube.com/@JimmyBriggs
  • J'ai aimé le ton humoristique de l'histoire. J'ai aimé le travail de graphisme effectuée sur le jeu. L'idée de voyager entre différente époque était intéressante.
  • Devilry! This game is as rich as an Argonauts point & click! The story is very nice, the heroine is original, the places very well designed, the interactions original and very well imagined. It's logical and crazy at the same time. The graphics are crazy, full of details. A realization that amuses and captivates, while respecting the rules of the Jam. Bravo for this wonderful creation!

Diversifier/Défi optionnel
I chose "YAY!" (it's just a text the character says when entering a scene), and also "5" (the pentagram used for jinxing, in the HUD and game logo), as well as a few memes: the flat crocodile from "flat f*ck friday", seen in the first scene, the "trololo" song from trololo man (this is only visible if you use the keyboard after solving the keyboard puzzle), the grumpy cat (visible in one of the scenes). I also included a melted GPU cable, but I am not sure if this counts as a meme. About the jam theme, it isn't that strong in this game unfortunately, but I hope with the different sceneries it is good enough.

I really enjoyed this game, amazing graphics and cool story, the effects in the in-between were nice too
There's not much more to say but I really enjoyed playing it, well done

Thank you for your feedback, NigeC! I wanted to add even more effects by the way, but those need some more technical research. :D

Ok… One of my favorites. I returned to playing it to the end. Nothing to say about the visuals, drawings, different designs in every timeline… But also the references and narrative constructions using the style, objects and situations in every timeline. With a very few scenarios you can make a story with a lot of small beautiful details. It´s amazing! The humour in some dialogues and monologues works very well (I played it with a smile).

The mechanics and puzzles are balanced (I understood the “bug” thing; if others no, maybe is a cultural, suburban or generational situation). One of the mistakes I made in my game was a localization issue. Here maybe the “bug” puzzle needs a hint.

Great job and project!!

Thank you so much for your feedback! I already tried to help players a bit with that "bug" problem by adding some lines to the loca since the first release. But your comment inspired me to additionally try another idea - I think I'll add something with the next bugfix update. Thank you. :)

The art in this game is amazing... how could this be done in such a short time?!

The characters are super fun, the music fits really well and there are a lot of things to interact with!

I'm really impressed, great job!

Thank you so much!

I created the backgrounds at first in Blender in 3D. There are actually not many details, and no textures either, and the models didn't have to be game-ready "clean" (since I wouldn't use them in-game, but 2D background images instead), so this was rather quick to do. It was also very helpful because I could play around with the perspective before starting drawing over them for a consistent style.

For the character I already had a character design ready before the game jam started. Last year I had started a "drawing a witch a day" project where I created a witch character design concept. In the beginning of 2024 I spontaneously sewed a witch doll based on that. And this witch doll made of real cloth was the actual reference for this game protagonist.  :) So I didn't have to do much think-work about that one, besides chosing the color palette for the different time settings.

And I worked through the whole two months. At first after work and on weekends, and then (I think the character animation alone took three of such "weeks"), I fortunately had two weeks of vacation where I was able to almost work full time on the jam. I didn't count the hours, but it was pretty much time after all, and for sure more than other participants were able to invest. I hope this isn't unfair in some way.

The following review is based on the first version of the game and I wrote it without knowing what kind of improvement/bug fixes would be done later. So this is a very personal review at an instant T. Please download the latest version and play it to make your own idea of this game!

The first thing that catches the eye in Jinx is the beauty of the art. The 2d illustrations are gorgeous, detailed and accurate and everything is lively and colored with taste. The 2d art is beautifully rendered with adventure creator which does wonders here compared to other 2d engines. The animation of the witch is a little more clumsy, but still works like a charm, particularly with the style of the character that is so funny and weird! What an original character design! :D

The game itself is not very difficult, the progression is easy to follow and good, with clear objectives. I don't have much to say about the gameplay, it's classical and if you like point and click adventure's you'll feel at home. The scenes are beautiful so that makes the game interesting to visit, with various items to gather here and there - they might be too obvious to find sometimes, such as the mushrooms. The world is actually well thought, with different areas to visit, in the past, present and future of the witch. It's really a good idea, and the design/coloring of the witch itself does change depending on the era. I like her kind of hippie style in her youth! And her cyberpunk clothes are unique!

There are other funny creatures and situations that occur during the story. The dialogues are short but the rants of the grumpy witch make great punchlines. There are some texts that I didn't understand, but it might be because of translation issues. I found a few bugs too, such as a mug hotspot that doesn't disappear after taking it, but it's not a big deal.

I did also like how we travel to the other eras. It's quite smart from the dev to have included an additional icon at the bottom. I was initially wondering what it is for, and why there is the game's logo included when we play, but it quickly became obvious that I'd need it to progress at some point. Good idea!

I don't know what to say to conclude, but I enjoyed the game and it is of high quality for a jam. I can't say today if I will remember it until the very end of my life as one of the most incredible games I've ever played but hey, it's just a jam game after all! It might miss a little something to make it definitely memorable, such as a longer story (I don't know), but all the ingredients are here to make it a potential winner of this Jam, from the quality of production to the ideas. Nothing prevented me from enjoying this game and its silly conclusion! I'd be happy to see more games with this funny witch!

Thank you so much for your detailed review! It is really interesting how you experienced the game. And it makes me so happy that you like the graphics, world and especially the character.

Do you remember what part of text it was that you didn't completely understand? Maybe I can improve on that. English isn't my native language either, so it can always be a problem of the translation.

Also thank you for the encouragement during development. It was a difficult time for me and this was really helpful and motivating. It was a bit hard to keep the other work in progress locations for me and not showing them during dev in the discord, to not spoil to much about the story of the game. :D

I'm sorry but I don't remember which text(s) I found hard to understand. When I watched the stream of TigerJ, I didn't have that feeling. I think it's not really translation issue, it's more that some short texts can be understood differently out of context, and sometimes I was like "what's she talking about?" lol. It's not an issue, it's probably just me, but I wanted to say it. Don't worry anyway, your game is great, I loved it!
