nice art style however very difficult to control

Submitted(+1)

I really like the art style of this game! As others have said, its a little confusing and the controls could be improved.

Submitted

cool game, though I kept getting restarted when the second monster i found threw his javelin even though it didn't hit me :(

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! those javelins are actually rakes and he is placing them on the ground to try to stun you lol. The trick is to hide behind the pillars while he is looking. Then move while he is turned around! He is by far the creature most are having issue with, probably because we didnt explain the hide mechanic too well.

Very cool art and solid gameplay. A little bit floaty controls but for 48 hours its very well done :)

Great game here's my review :

ART

the art is gorgeous ! did you make everything yourself or is that a premade art set ? either way fits the theme perfectly

SOUND

neat sound design, would have loved if there a music that fit the atmosphere

LEVEL DESIGN

Super solid, very well tought out i took notes because that was some great layouting

GAMEPLAY

great mecaniques however not well explained which left me in confusing until i read your comment, would be better if you added text above the buttons you added to explain what to actually do (and that E looked like a C imo lol)

FUN AND THEME

i had a ton of fun would play a full release, and it definitly fit the theme

BUGS

i found one minor bug when you pick up that ball thing and throw it, it's still stuck on the sprite which is very annoying tbh, but nothing game breaking.

All in all good job !

Developer(+1)

Hey, thanks for your in depth review! Yes the art was all done by my partner in 48 hours. She got talent for sure!

The games weak point is most definitely the lack of tutorial however we are thinking about polishing it up and giving it a full release. Believe it or not, a bunch of animations didnt get put in because i couldnt keep up with her art hahha!

Thanks for playing and im glad you enjoyed it!

Submitted

Oh wow that sure is impressive, will be waiting for a full release !

Pretty cool! Like others have said it's confusing at the start, but once you get it the game is fun to explore. Ideally there would be checkpoints: since the spear enemy is quite fast and players have never seen an enemy like it when they first arrive, it's very easy to die and having to restart completely makes it hard to learn how to beat his and makes people less likely to want to keep playing. It seems from your comments that you've learned a lot about the importance of tutorials, so keep that in mind for next time! Nicely done :)

Developer

Thanks for your feedback! We're definitely looking forward to next time!

Hey Everyone just a repost of the controls because we know that was one of our weak spots and don't want them to be buried at the bottom, thank you everyone for playing <3

S - hide behind foreground objects

Shift - sprint

Space - Jump

E - Interact

Esc - Quit

Submitted(+1)

A clever little action platformer. I couldn't work out how to avoid dying to the spear throwing enemy. The pixel graphics are gorgeous and the sound effects are really nice.

Developer(+1)

Hello! Indeed we didn't explain the hiding very well; if you're down to give er another shot, press S by the pillars to hide behind em! He seems to be our hardest enemy because of the lack of tutorial, sorry about that!

Submitted(+1)

The art style is great! I was a bit confused about what to do in the start, but apart from that I really liked it! Well done!

Submitted(+1)

Love the sound effects and pixel art! They fit perfectly together. Took me a while to figure out what to do and that you had to go left as I instinctively went right, but all in all a solid game!

Submitted(+1)

The pixel art and sound effects are amazing! The lack of checkpoints is pretty harsh and I think infinite pies with a cooldown would be better than having to go back to the oven every time you throw one, but overall solid entry :D !!

Submitted(+1)

Spooooky atmosphere. Good job on that !

Submitted(+1)

Yup the controls could less "floaty". And Character speed could be increased. But great game nonetheless!

Submitted(+1)

Nice Game....Solid Jam entry!

Submitted(+1)

omg the atmosphere, great even though you got so little time! had a really hard time trying to get the atmosphere right. As previously said, the controls could be a little more snappy and clear

Developer

We're so glad you enjoyed it! We're looking forward to implementing everyone's advice on our next jam!

Really  fun and good looking game, with a good and spooky atmosphere. Just thought the game controls could be a bit more clear, couldn't figure out some of the control prompts at the beginning.

Developer

Glad you liked it, thanks for your critique!

I REALLY love the pixel art and the character design is great. It was really nice and atmospheric, I'd actually love to see a full game made in this style. A few points I noticed (I know you have addressed some of these in other comments already):

- It took me a moment to figure out what the control prompts were telling me to do at the beginning. The E looks like a C too.
- Monsters Pied font looks a little out of place, though maybe that is intentional.
- I kept getting killed at the second section and wasn't sure why, the spear wasn't hitting me.
- Meringue Mansion is an amazing name and now I've played the game it totally makes sense :D

Developer

Thanks friend, those spears are actually rakes, you have to hide behind the pillars otherwise the monster will see you and come kill you. The rakes stun you if hit. That part seems to be the part most are stuggling with, probably because the hide mechanic wasn't explained well.  Thanks for the comments though. Really appreciate it.

Nice, atmospheric graphics. I liked the contrast between the somber graphics and the goal of throwing pies at other monsters haha. It's a really difficult game but the variety in challenges and monsters kept me coming back. Would have liked a checkpoint after each monster though. Restarting the whole game every time I make a mistake is a bit disheartening.

Developer(+1)

Yeah i was supposed to implement soft restarts where progress would be saved but unfortunately i forgot/ran out of time hahah.  How it goes i guess!

Looks good, and I'm sure the concept would be more interesting if I could see more of it. 🙂

The guy with the spear killing you and sending you all the way back to the beginning of the game (as opposed to the beginning of the room) really put a hamper on willingness to go all the way back through again - especially when it's pretty unclear what to do in that room (because the S key is blurry and doesn't tell you what it does). Letting the player try the same problem again repeatedly more quickly would help them figure it out for themselves.

Sorry you ran out of time 😞.

Thanks for your feedback man! As I said in the other comments, I agree that the ui/tutorials needed some more work. Our goal was to make a fairly unforgiving but short game so those setbacks wouldn't take you back too far, but of course next time we'll try to communicate the mechanics better!

Submitted

My first thought was that the graphics are really nice. Very atmospheric.  I had no idea what to do at the start , and I found the controls a little floaty. Once I got into it, I really got into it though! It's a very difficult game, filled with dirty tricks, but there's always enough of a tease to bring you back. I must have died about 20 times but I did eventually finish it.

If I had one criticism, it's that there might need to be a little more guidance at the start to get players into it (also the "E" in the button prompts looks like a "C"). Other than that though, a really fun game!

Developer

Thank you so much for your perseverance lol, as I said in another comment the ui unfortunately took a hit because I did everything else first and was a little poorly paced for that section. In fact those prompts were made in that extra hour we got so I'm very grateful we got that time or it could have been even more ambiguous :O I agree with the E as well, I was sweating looking at it. All in all a good lesson for pacing and now we have a better idea of where to start. As for the gameplay, good to know it wasn't TOO frustrating B) Sometimes our game design is a little diabolical and I'm glad we got to test it out for the jam! Thanks for your feedback friend!
