Start small. Set realistic goals and milestones

Pretty much this. For your first game, aim for a small one, try to do 'everything' for it, even if you think you suck at it. That will teach you where your strengths are, what needs work and what is way beyond what you can ever hope to achieve.
Don't spend all your time looking up tutorials; you'll never get anything done. You will get more out of doing than watching others do.
this has been my experience (although i learned Java at college which really was the foundation for me).
i dont watch tutorials, just started by making tiny things and expanding them. using google to find solutions to problems in text form (AI is quite good now for that).
Even with these compromises its been exasperating at times. but i feel like i got out the other end with my patience intact and its thanks to doing tiny projects/finding ways to solve problems quickly/not sitting through videos only to discover they are obsolete or dont match the version/packages your using.
Got mad respect for those who go big tho :)
