a valid critique! do you have any thoughts as what could work better as far as control mechanics? that is one of the major things i would like to polish up post-jam.

I'm afraid the problem is not in the mechanics, but in the concept. 
Mouse and keyboard input is too small for such accurate control of the complex body parts mechanism.
Maybe you should try it in VR or use ragdolls to simplify controls. 
I wish I could say something more optimistic, but I see it this way.
