Maybe ponder a bit, what consequences this has. And that there are only 10 tags you can have. And that the devs not only chose the tags but create them. They are not from a fixed pool. You can use any tag. Even the ones you suggested. There are even people tagging "game". Or "indie". Even "3d game" is used as a tag.

With this knowlege you can answer all your questions yourself. Also the question, why it is not done what you propose. And not doable.

Also, if you quote external, please put a link. That read like stuff that people would copy onto wikipedia. And that is not always correct. But most importantly, it is not context appropriate. We are talking about tags on an indie gameing site. Not about technical terms or marketing buzz words. What good does it do, if you use technical correct terms, but no one using the site would search for them?

Should you still wonder how to find the games you want, maybe try actually searching for them. You will find out, how to find them. Browsing for a specific tag goes only so far. Use alternative tags that mean the same. Click on related games of games you like. Look at your recommendations. Look at the collections listed when browsing, someone might have made a 3d games collection. Or use the 3d tag and scroll past the vn. You can even browse for 3d and add the exclusion for visual novels. How to do that, look in other threads about tags. You will find it.

Why is all this necessary if people are not able to understand each other because no one uses dictionaries and the same word has a different meaning for each person? But these games also have other, more popular tags, tagged 16-bit (6,145 results), Platformer (128,458 results)

You need to actually read the answers. The method to do tag exclusion, is talked about in several threads.

You might hope to attract attention. But you tag what you deem fit for your project. You can even invent tags. Never saw an open tagging system? It is as open as hashtags are on social media. So go to X and complain that people invent tags all day, instead of using predefined ones.

There is two problems here. First, those descriptions are "descriptions" and not "definitions". Look up the words, if you have trouble with the meaning of those words. Second, the description of the 3d tag is as non commiting as it can be. It merely says, it is 3d games. Which does not give you any new information. You alread are browsing for games and you already have selected 3d.

With an open tagging system, you do not consult any descriptions. You just write in the tags you think would describe your game or should be associated with the game. It is tagging, not selecting categories like game or not game.

It seems the tags you are looking for are only (!) used in adult games. No non-adult game uses this tag here on itch.

Did it not occur to you, that games are marketed outside of itch? Itch staff specifically recommends to not rely on internal marketing from existing on the index.

Just because anyone can create their own tag does not mean that anyone will use them. These tags are not in the list of tags, they do not have descriptions, and therefore they will not be used by ordinary site users. They just don't know that such tags exist.

This is an US based site. Parts of it are available localized, but there is no system of localizing game pages and community is still in English. You asked on English speaking community forum in English. And in English you got answers. Also English is not my native language either.

You seem to have a need for it. 3D is short for three dimensions. So far so correct. But the tag 3D is not the same as the abreviation 3D. It is whatever people use it for. Cinemas use the same abreviation for stereoscopic movies. Are the 3d games you are looking for in stereoscopic vision? Context is important. Context here is a tag and its usage. And there is a difference if you use classic "drawn" characters or 3d rendered images, even if the game is "flat".

You can suggest a different usage, but as you yourself already noticed, it is impossible to convince all the developers to change their opinion about the meaning and usage of the tag 3d, so they would migrate to use 3dcg for flat images.

It all boils down to the statement several people told you: devs chose the tags. It is all there is to it. You can complain and be annoyed by it. But neither you nor itch can change this. Oh, sure, in a trivial sense, itch could overhaul the tagging system and radically change it, but this is not gonna happen anytime soon. They might switch to a predefined set one day, who knows. But I doubt it. There are even tags for som jam participiants.

There are serious problems and pitfalls with the tagging system here. But you can find interesting games, if you see an interesting tag on a game you already found. The game info box will have links to those tags. That is how I found out, that the list is incomplete and you can write and guess any tag. Like the banana tag.

But I do not consider the usage of some popular tags like 3d to be an issue. If we start to open this can of worms, you can complain about half of the horror games here. The horror tag description is wrong to begin with. But, well, horror here is used for some jump scares. Meh. Whatever.

Oh, and not even with a closed tagging system as on Steam you will get all "3d" games according to your defintion with a catch-it-all tag. So just use the common tags used usually for this type of games. There is no single tag that will be used for all of them.

That stuff is really hard to translate. Try using the output of the translator as input and do it again to see how funny some things read after translation. I know what you meant, but the translated stuff was just garbage.

It is an advantage to have a few tags that are seldom used. Like 200 games. You are linked by the other 199 games via the game info box. And competition against 200 games is different than against 5000. I found many games this way. Just look at 3dcg as an example.

I only look at them while searching. If I went to the game’s page, it means I’m already interested in it and the rest doesn’t matter.

You click the little info box on a game page and there you click on a tag. Or you guess common words that might be used.

There will always be people disagreeing with the choice of tags or even the meaning of tags. Or their relevance. You disagree with both, ok. Moving on.

I think this is the core of the misunderstanding here: you expect tags to be used by a set of rules and strict definitions of tags. But that is not what tags are. They are an association with a concept. Not a pledge to adhere to a definition. The use of the term "description" and the fact that users can suggest new description for a tag should make this clear.

Tags are labels, qualities, attributes, whatever you might want to call them. They are even words according to the naive definition of, a word is a thing I can say.

To put it differently: tags are made out of words, but are not used as words. It is the words that are used as tags. And they can have different meaning in their usage as tags. Different from any definition in a dictionary or their technical meaning.

3dcg stems from games that used cg as a (short) term for the rare ingame graphic, that was static computer generated (images). Typically the reward pic. You might have noticed a certain common attribute all the games here on itch that used that tag do have.

Also, if you check google trends, you will find, that the term 3dcg has the same search frequency, as it had 5 years before. This is not a new term, nor is it used the way you think it is used. It also has not the meaning of screenshots. It just means computer generated.

You might find a nieche site that does have central "tagging" according to their own rules and put those screenshot games into 3dcg category. It is not wrong, but misleading. Other nieche sites will show you high quality short movies and pictures made in advanced raytracing apps not unlike the ones that produce cinema animation movies for the same "tag". Actually, you probably are used to one of those sites and think all sites are like this.

But what I used was the “Similar Games” button. The site searches for games with similar tags, but only uses official tags.

It says related. That is not quite the same as similar, but I do not know what the intention is. I would expect a selection of games according to the motto of: if you like this game, you might also like those games.

If it is merely a: look, those games have shared tags, what is the point? I can just click those tags in the game description. I can even combine the most important tags, that I liked the most. There is little of a button that does just this.

Also I tried a bit. Explain, why I can click related games on a game that only has one tag and will find lots of games, but none of those games share the single tag the game had. Or another situation, the games shown only share one or two of the tags.

This is speculation, but the tags it shows on related game, might just be the suggested tags and have little to do with the games shown. It takes about three months for the algorithm to analyze what games are related to each other. And itch will not tell how it works, because people will try to exploit this information. Also, they include random in ranking and in search results.

But to end this. I believe I know exactly what you seek and why you do not find it. But I will not discuss specifics in open community.

The problem is, this is an indie platform. For indie games. This is amateur and hobby game developers without much budget, with the occasional small game studio. 3d is not cheap. It is more difficult to develop and it does not run on the potato level machines and mobile devices often used by users of the site. So using 3d will decrease the size of the audience, in addition to being hard to do.

What does this mean for your little search predicament. It means that you search for games, that are rare here. Especially in the nieche you are browsing.

And of course with the 3d tag. Or the other tags I mentioned that imply a 3d game environment, most common is third-person. But you will not get an exhaustive list of such games with any tags.

With an open tagging system, you do not consult any descriptions. You just write in the tags you think would describe your game or should be associated with the game. It is tagging, not selecting categories like game or not game.

To elaborate.

The tagging comes first. Then comes the description what people use those tags for.

And that would also be the explanation why the 3d description is so vague. Or why you can propose a new description for a tag.
