Ok.. where to start. I have participated in 3 GWJ so far, and I think this might be a contender for the best project I have ever played.
I was deceived by the charming hand-drawn cutesy art.. this is a masterclass in execution. As a new gamedev, I learnt so much from playing this. Ill just list them here.
- The contrasting themes between the art and the dark interludes.
- The volume of art assets (a motif for every stage? wow)
- Ingenuity in conveying downward movement with up-drifting clouds
- Transition from lighthearted music, fading out and fading in of screams as a feedback of progress
- Diversity of power-ups
- Telegraphing of attacks (we had the same idea as you for our "kamikaze" voidlings, similar to your fighter jets, and your idea is a great learning point for ours.
- Simple yet effecting flash out screen transitions of different colors.
- Perfect visuals, color palette.
- Readability of the UI
- Poetry?!
