Game Description
DEFCON JUNIOR is a cutesy bullethell for those who want to cause mass extinction via nuclear annihilation. With help from "Lil' Defcon Junior," work together to avoid enemies and obstacles aimed at stopping your destruction. Become progressively stronger as a duo, grabbing new abilities and stat boosts with each city eroded to void. Do you have what it takes to end all life?

How does your game tie into the theme?
DEFCON JUNIOR was made and submitted as part of the 69th Godot Wild Jam. The theme for this jam was "Void." Inspired by this theme, the duo at Hangover Sunshine explored the concepts of oblivion and destruction. This led to the idea of having the player create a void, becoming a nuke that destroys all life until there is nothing left but a void.

One of my highest rated games this jam. It's not perfect but the intent and passion behind it is palpable. I wish there was a bit more push-and-pull between continuing and not-- the gameplay is a bit rote and there's no in-game reward for continuing, so it's kind of an easy choice when the game asks you to stop. There is also a bit of an audio click whenever the voice of God plays, which is a small nitpick but it took me out of it. Despite this, the game was well thought-out and really made me feel something. Great job!

Developer(+1)

Yoyo~!

Thank you so much for the kind words and the feedback. ImPasta and I are hoping to do a polish push to make each aspect of the game a bit better. Can confirm that audio is a big part of the game we want to elevate for our next update (i.e., we will look into that audio click and get that fixed). As for gameplay stuff, we'll brainstorm; always do appreciate the call-out when y'all experience any gameplay hiccups or progression oversights. Mitigating the feeling of rote and mindless repetition is on the to-do list.

Again, appreciate you taking the time to play our game and giving us a rating!

I absolutely love it when games turn out to be more than they let on, and I’m really glad I went into this completely blind. the progression here is really thought-provoking, and the ending is just … impeccable. great concept and incredible execution!

Developer(+1)

Heyo~!

Thank you so much for playing our game and for the kind words. We are glad you enjoyed the progression and for the hype around our execution. We put a lot of work into this one, so hearing that you enjoyed it is a great motivator for polishing this guy and for our future projects!

Wow -- this was so well-polished, and the concept so creative! Just the core gameplay loop on its own would have made for an impressive jam game, but then the progressive story and increase in difficulty that took place over the course of seven (!!!) levels took it that much further. Sound design is awesome -- as someone else already commented, the transition from cutesy music to people screaming for their lives is... well, it's really effective, especially as the enemies fade out and you just have to sit there and think about what you’re doing lol. And I'm sure I don't even need to point out how nice the style is: the smooth animations, the pictures at the end of each level, and especially the [spoiler] that talks to you in between with that ~smooth and sonorous voice~ and forces you to actively keep choosing to continue. This could've easily been a game I bought on Steam; that it's a 9-day jam game instead is really remarkable. Amazing work all!

PS: Very appreciative of the content warning provided at the beginning -- that was a really nice accessibility feature and let me adjust my audio settings going into it accordingly.

Whoops, so I wrote this review before getting to the final level, reached the final level, and realized I immediately had to come scurrying back here to praise it in particular. I mean this with full sincerity, that's brilliant level design. Especially liked the space it gave to turn over and over that last line of "dialogue" in my head, really powerful writing.

[Spoilers for the ending:]

One thing I will say in the interest of being thorough, just because I commented on the content warning in my original post: If you decide to upload a post-jam patch, would you consider adding a jumpscare warning to the list of content warnings, and/or to the game page somewhere? I realize that that may take away from the surprise at the end a bit too much, but the rest of the game's content is definitely enough to make the player believe that the subject matter and mild flashing/loud sounds on "explosion" are all that they're about, and unfortunately in the inclusion of a content warning the implication is sort of given that the content warning covers all that could be potentially distressing for a player.

Developer (1 edit)

Hello hello!

Glad you enjoyed our lil' game. In reference to that end-game moment, you are referring to, we will definitely get our content warnings updated. I think I literally just forgot >.< (you know how jams are). We will get that added and properly updated after the jam submission page unlocks. Thank you for the feedback and for that callout!

Totally get it! I thought it might have been something like that, the rest of the game was extremely thoughtful when it comes to accessibility. All in all still a fantastic submission and easily a top contender for me! I’m thinking I’ll have to check out some of your past games soon, if they’re all as weird and wonderful as this was… Head Honcho looks very interesting :)). Keep up the great work, I look forward to seeing what else you make in future jams!!

Developer

Heard and thank you so much for the kind words and the hype! We def enjoy making weird games like this one. Can say that this project is more serious than the others. Think they come off as more silly IMO :) Did most of the visuals and writing for this guy, so hearing that you and others enjoyed it is super motivating for myself to get back and polish this project more and to start creating more!

Really awesome game!! Impeccable style, it played so smoothly, the upgrades felt great, and the cutscenes gave the whole thing such a cool twist. Really very enjoyable throughout! I also enjoyed the end of each level where you're basically left with 20 seconds of screaming to contemplate what you're doing. Fantastic work!

Developer

Hello~! Thanks for giving our game a try and glad you enjoyed it. Those narrative cutscene moments def took a hot minute getting set up, so glad it ended up being a cool inclusion for you. ImPasta did all the audio work for the end of each level (which honestly, IMO,  I think actually makes that end level moment impactful). Will make sure he gets those kudos.

Again, thanks a bunch for giving our lil' game a try!

This went from a zero to a hundred very fast, you tricked me. First I was like: oh that was it? Cute... but then I've witnessed things. very clever, very fun. Congrats.

p.s.: on my second run I checked if there's a secret ending for killing only ducks :D would do it again

Developer(+1)

Hello!

Thanks for playing our game and for the kind words! Taking note of your "p.s." I kind of want to up the narrative a smidgen. Would be nice if we added a couple of alternative routes. Will add it to the to-do. Regardless, thanks for taking the time out of your day to try our lil' game out!

Excellent game with extreme levels of polish, juice and fun and a rather morbid end.

Getting all this done in one week is a pretty crazy achievement. The art style is polished and whimsical with the interlude scenes balancing it perfectly. The difficulty slowly ramps up and the power up system is great to match that ramp up. The lower zones are still a little empty and lead to a little bit of a waiting game but it's a very minor issue.

I'd absolutely love to play a bigger version of this with longer levels and having an alternative pacifist route that doesn't just end the game. Maybe switching sides to stop bombs or being forced into completing the levels at least.

Great game and insane achievement for a week long jam. One of the best I've played by far.

Developer(+1)

Heyhey~!

Thanks for playing our game and for the kind words. We plan on doing a little bit of balancing for each level in our next update. I def messed up those timings a "weeeebit" when getting each level done (literally did it the night before jam submission lol).

Also yes, pacifist route! I ended up doing a good portion of the writing for this game. Know ImPasta and I were thinking of polishing the narrative a bit so I will throw that as an item on my to-do list.

Eitherway, super appreciative of your time, and thanks for playing our lil' game.

The seventh level gave me chills; having to select a power up to then come up to this is genius!

10/10

Aaaay~!

Thanks for playing our game and for you the time you took to shoot us a rating and some kind words. We definitely wanted to capture that feeling of the jam theme, so glad that the seventh level came in to give "them chills."

Yo!

Thanks for giving our game a try. We always try to make games that can be a bit contentious when it comes to its depiction of its subject matter.  Regardless though, appreciative of you taking time out of your day to play our game and for the feedback.

Really nice game. There was some nice increasing difficulty and the large variety of unique powerups was a nice addition (especially since I wasnt expecting this to be a powerup game so that caught me by surprise and was enjoyable to mess with them)

Was a bit empty in the orange to red zones which ended up mostly just being waiting for something to happen. The palette swaps, design of everything, and music were all great though (although music got a bit repetitive since it was being played over and over)

I found a bug where you can glitch the powerups. The buttons are still selectable when the screen is fading out so if you click one when thats happening it resets the fadeout and counts that as a press for the powerup to stack it. Tried it out with the powerup that gives +1 projectile before you have to reload and got 15 projectiles before reloading.

Overall everything works well together and was fun to play

Developer

Yoyo!

Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to play our game. Def agree about the low enemy spawn rates at the moment. Some of those levels could use some love in terms of balancing and getting enough enemies to spawn before all hell breaks loose. We are planning on doing a big polish update after the jam, so we'll def add alterations to the level soundtrack needed to avoid that feel of repetitiveness.

As for the bug, thank you for the call out! We'll take a look and get that fixed and updated once the jam ends.

Again, thank you so much for playing our game, for the feedback, and for your kind words!

Ok.. where to start. I have participated in 3 GWJ so far, and I think this might be a contender for the best project I have ever played.

I was deceived by the charming hand-drawn cutesy art.. this is a masterclass in execution. As a new gamedev, I learnt so much from playing this. Ill just list them here.

  • The contrasting themes between the art and the dark interludes.
  • The volume of art assets (a motif for every stage? wow)
  • Ingenuity in conveying downward movement with up-drifting clouds
  • Transition from lighthearted music, fading out and fading in of screams as a feedback of progress
  • Diversity of power-ups
  • Telegraphing of attacks (we had the same idea as you for our "kamikaze" voidlings, similar to your fighter jets, and your idea is a great learning point for ours.
  • Simple yet effecting flash out screen transitions of different colors.
  • Perfect visuals, color palette.
  • Readability of the UI
  • Poetry?!

Everything is awesome. 5* all around. Immensely inspirational submission. Thank you for the learning points!

I really liked the contrast between the visuals and the story. Very creative game, kind of expected the ending twist ;) The visuals are absolutely adorable, you did a great job here.

Developer

Yoyo! Whaddup?

Thank you so much for your love towards our art.  I hand-paint all the assets via Procreate and am incredibly appreciative when people get a kick out of it. As for the ending, we are planning on playing around with it a bit more to make it more of a surprise.

But regardless, thank you so much for taking time out of your day to play our game and for shooting us a comment.

Very bold and unique hook - at the end of the first level takes you by surprise. Beyond that is some lite dodging vertical scrolling gameplay with a nice coat of paint. I appreciate the bold direction that you wouldn't expect, and the follow-through on presenting it.

Developer

Heyo!

Thank you so much for the feedback and time playing our game. We are thinking for the next update, giving the project a slight smidge in terms of difficulty. Might be a little too light at the moment. Again, super appreciative of the time you spent playing our game and for the kind words.

Cheers!
