Okay, first the elephant in the room: It's a bit boring gameplay-wise having it entirely be RNG. It can work, but you instead need to focus on the emotional experience the same way a movie would.

I won... but didn't feel like I did anything to deserve a "win" and there was nothing that made me care if my character lost fingers. That's not a good sign for this type of game.

The sound design was nice.

The music was good at first but became repetitive and annoying very quickly. I can't stress enough how big of an issue this was. Having to keep listening to it for so long was more of a punishment than losing my fingers.

The voice acting and art was okay.

It was a nice attempt, and I think you'll have something cool if you keep working on this. Right now though, I'm afraid it's hard to say much positive about this game. I just don't feel connected to the gameplay, nor invested in the character's fate.

There's just nothing that really makes me care in this game's current condition. However, I don't think this game is irredeemable. Keep working on it! Figure out a way to make us invested in wanting to win. Make us feel powerless, make us want to beg for the dice to save us from losing our fingers. I want to feel the sensation of rolling the dice as if it's me doing it, not just pressing a button. Make the event of having the finger cut off feel very unpleasant to the player to make sure they don't want to see it happen. Make us feel like we're the one putting our hand out for the knife's punishment. Stir up some big powerful emotions. Then you'll have an incredible interactive experience here. Good luck!

Sorry to hear it doesn't work. May I ask what went wrong?

Title screen is fantastic, gives a great first impression. When a game starts up like that, you know you're going to have fun!

Love the combat system. Fascinating blend of tactical RPG combat and puzzle game. Lots of interesting stuff to wrap your head around.

Music is great, although maybe a bit repetitive after playing for a while!

Sound effects are mediocre, but they get the job done. Better than nothing, and with more time I'm sure you could replace them with very nice sound design and make this even better.

The game mechanics are a bit confusing to figure out, but very nice once understood. Having the explanations of what each action does in the actual game instead of as a screenshot would have helped. Although I did like how it was a bit nostalgic feeling like I had to step away from the game to go read the game manual!

Overall, extremely wonderful game! I'd love to see this combat system implemented into an RPG.

Bonus: Other ways this could be built upon:
Have items or abilities that you can use once per combat encounter, right now everything only matters for that particular round.

Add multiple party members.

Put characters on a grid and add a color for movement amounts.

Character creation which affects the types of dice you get and numbers that are on them.

The game didn't work for me, sadly. I was looking forward to playing it too, from the description! It sounds neat at least? Details of the error below:

Title screen worked, How to Play worked, but attempting to start the game from the title screen results in the game crashing with the following error:

Pros:

Super innovative gameplay! Extremely unique take on a puzzle platformer.

Love the idea of being a dice going through inspection and telling that story through gameplay mechanics.

The sound design and atmospheric background music gave a very chilling creepy vibe too.

And the little flavor text in the screens when you lose before you start the level again was an amazing touch, really brought me into the game's world.

Cons:

Unfortunately the graphics let this game down a bit, they weren't badly done, but didn't seem to fit the theme or the dark gloomy atmosphere that the story, gameplay, and audio created. Definitely hurt my immersion into the story that every other aspect was conveying. Good sprites, wrong game to use them in.

There was a bit of a large difficulty jump, at least for me. Could have had more levels to slowly introduce techniques to solving puzzles, but as its a game jam, I understand it's probably too much to ask.

If you end up developing this into a full game, consider taking a look at Portal for how to slowly introduce puzzle solving concepts one level at a time until you've built up the player's skills and techniques enough that you can give them harder puzzles that the previous levels will have trained them to make sure they'll have the skillset to handle anything you throw at them.

One of the more unique games of the jam, and extremely impressive for your first ever jam. Well done! Hopefully you enjoyed making it, and will continue to participate in more game jams!
