This is the first game i've rated 5/5 on everything. There is just something about it that i absolutely love, I think its the replayability and also the art of Jack. I can't imagine how long it took to make the SFX for the word NO if you did it by hand. If you release a cart, let me know! Bravo!
Edit: Also jack you sassy bag of bones, how can you have any ice cream if you don't eat your chicken?
This is a limitation of the default text mechanic in the GB Studio engine, I do plan on making a smaller font and having the text boxes be smaller. The text boxes borrow a good chunk of the VRAM in the Gameboy so its going to be worth it in the long run, even if just to be able to squeeze out a few more pixels for sprites and backgrounds. I do want to keep the dialog, but i might space it out a bit so its not just a text wall when you start the game. Also plan on adding a skip dialog button!
THIS has the soul 100%. i'm reminded that a simple but compelling concept is all ya need, this speaks volumes to that. As for feedback, An audio cue for damage would be helpful. Other than that i actually enjoy the difficulty quite a bit, older games were unforgiving and this is almost in the same vein. This in my opinion, makes it fun, because its not impossible. It feels like it's a skill you can learn.
As for bugs, as the apparitions get super close to the screen their hit boxes don't seem to line up with the actual entity, its around 2-3 pixels inside the outline. this might be because its looking for the entire crosshair being inside the outline, i am unsure.
Whenever you make it available for download, ill be the first in line. id love to play this on my own time. Bravo!
And congratulations on your first game!
The music and art style is amazing. The boss wrecked me immediately, 10/10 . there are some things in the game that would be nigh impossible on an actual GB but i doubt anyone would notice unless they work on GB Roms (the light ring around the player). That said this is very very fun and is just a good game in general. The light mechanic is very clever and unique. having to make the choice to drop the light and swing the sword or keep the light and run is exciting. Great job!
Thank you for the feedback! Yeh i was burning the midnight oil and submitted what i had with about 8 minutes to spare. I also encountered the bathroom hard lock. After the results are graded i do plan on addressing all of the things people have mentioned here. This is my first stab at a narrative game and im thrilled you all like the vibe of it, it is very encouraging!
A lot of us thought we only had to submit on the google form, especially those off us who are new to Itch. I think this is a huge oversight and really hurt a lot of devs. Yall really should open up a second page or something with the games from the google forms that were submitted on time. I know we've missed out on the prize money but it would still be cool to see us as participating in the jam.
Thanks for letting me know! I've been chasing this issue for quite a bit, thought i had fixed it. It has to do with certain interrupts having a delay and then the "what arrow are you at in the stratagem" variable moving out of sync. It runs a little better on the actual hardware than in browser. What platform are you using?
