Thanks for starting this up!

Hey there, thank you for the lovely message. We're happy to hear the game resonated with you, especially as a person planning on going into the mortuary field!

We're also very sorry to hear about your dog, but are glad to hear the game could be of some comfort during this time 💜

thank you so much for your kind words about the game. we're so glad to hear you enjoyed it 💜

We'd love to include A Mortician's Tale if you have space for us: https://laundrybear.itch.io/morticians-tale

Hi Agonychristie!

Sorry you are running into this with your games. There are a few things to look into, if you haven't already.

  • The UnityPlayer.dll should be*right* beside the morticianstale.exe file. DLL files can get confused sometimes.
  • Sometimes a program gets blocked by anti-virus or anti-malware.  Try briefly turning off any live scanning.
  • We've heard of people running into issues where enterprise software can muck things up. Look at what other applications are running, including in your task tray (or use task manager) and close any that you don't need running at the moment.
  • Installing to another folder sometimes helps, though because it did run once, I don't think that is the case here. That said, the itch.io app is quite nice and has sometimes helped with these kinds of issues by managing downloads well.

If none of those work, feel free to let us know and include a screenshot of the error. Since the issue seems to likely be something conflicting with Unity games in general, I can only help so much but I'll do the best I can!

It actually agrees a little too much with some computers! The framerate runs uncapped on the fastest setting so if you have a strong computer it will run the game as fast as possible, using up resources and making the framerate unreasonably high.  A fix for this (being able to toggle vsync from inside the game) is still in the works. When it's ready, I'll post on the forums so everybody can get the latest version.

Hi Ginger93!

This is strange since the game doesn't talk over the internet at all, as far as I know. We had analytics at one point but removed them quite some time ago.

Could you describe how the issue is presenting on your computer? Are downloads failing or other online applications lagging when playing?

- Andrew

HI Hydnellum,

This appears to not be the itch version of the game. Would you be able to redownload the game via itch and let me know if the problem persists (and attach the output_log.txt if it does)?

- Andrew

The launcher, and holding ctrl at launch, is a actually a Unity feature. That said, some developers opt to have it disabled while other games show the launcher at every boot, so your experience with other games will vary. We have ours set to be hidden by default but still accessible by holding ctrl. Games running on newer versions of Unity will have it disabled as this is a feature Unity is trying to phase out in favour of giving the player in game options.

I'll also mention that other games may have other settings for quality as they are customizable and, like some of the features in Mortician's Tale, can also be ignored and overridden by the game. Fore example, shadows and resolution can be set in game and will override the launcher settings. In general I prefer having the options in game and will be adding VSync to the options menu in the next update and will have it turned on by default going forward.

HI Cyb10101!

Thank you for such a detailed investigation! I'll have to look into this as I do believe vsync should be on by default, which will limit the frame rate to the refresh rate of the monitor (which is preferred over setting a hard cap). Clearly, it seems to not be the case on some computers as even high end monitors would only update at 144Hz.

I'm going to spend some time tonight looking into this and try making a new build as the windows versions on itch are slightly out of date anyway (the Steam version had a few extra updates to address Steam specific issues). I will update this thread when I have uploaded a new set of builds!

UPDATE

I believe I may have found the bug.  If you don't mind testing something with the current build:

  • Hold the ctrl button while booting the game to bring up the pre-launch menu (it's normally hidden)
  • Go to quality settings and set the game to Good.
  • Run the game and see if the performance still spikes

It looks like the lowest (Fast and Fastest) settings have VSync turned off, which makes sense as, if you have a low end computer vsync may cause very low frame rates. With Vsync turned off there can be a boost to the frame rate for lower end computers (at the cost of screen tearing).

The proper fix will be to expose the VSync option in the menu which I will try to get into the next update!

Hey there,

I'm so sorry to hear about both your grandma and your friend. I can't imagine how you must be feeling -- especially having to process all of it on top of a global pandemic. I'm thinking of you, and hope you're able to find ways to grieve and take care of yourself during this time.

Thank you very much for the kind words about our game as well. I'm glad to hear it could be a small comfort to you during this.

Thank you so much!

Hey there, thanks so much for taking the time to write this. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the game and that many parts were relatable! We worked really hard with a bunch of our funeral director friends to make sure we were being as accurate and respectful as possible, so i'm glad to hear the game was "on the nose"!

-- Gabby

Hey there,

Firstly, I'm so sorry to hear about your father -- I'm thinking of you and sending all my love and condolences to you and your loved ones. I also wanted to say thank you very much for the kind words about our game. I'm glad to hear it was impactful and hope it can bring you a little bit of comfort during this time.

-- Gabby

Hey there. I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your father, as well as the loss of being able to grieve properly. I can't imagine the pain and frustration you must have felt over this last year and a half.

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us. I'm glad to hear our game could be a small comfort, and hope you're able to find other ways to help you grieve during this time.

Hi everyone!

We've had a very small number of reports by some users on Windows about the game becoming stuck after the splash screens. This will look like a black screen that leaves trails of the cursor. I've been looking into the issue and, with the help of some very patient players over email, have tracked one of the causes of this (and hopefully the only) to vendor audio tool incompatibilities.

For the majority of players with this issue, a reboot has solved the problem, but there are still those of you who can't progress into the game. If you are having this issue, please check to see if your computer has any vendor provided audio tools that are running and disable them. Alienware Audio has known issues with our audio tool, FMOD, as well as a few other similar tools from other computer manufacturers. You can find more information at this Unity forum post which describes the issue in a bit more detail.

Since the issue lies between FMOD and the computer, I am uncertain if this can be fully addressed, though I am currently looking into the ability to continue playing, without audio, as a workaround when FMOD isn't compatible.

Thank you to everyone who has played the game and my apologies who is dealing with this known incompatibility. I'll update here when a workaround is uploaded.

Hi Madamhyde!

This sound more like an issue outside of the game but I can try and help.  What operating system and browser are you using?

Some possibilities:

  • On macOS, safari will automatically extract the game when it is done downloading, so the zip will be removed and you will be left with just the app.
  • Anit-virus on Windows can be a little over cautious at times. If you are running any, check to see if it has quarantined the file or reported anything.
  • Have you had similar issues with other games form the bundle or itch in general?
  • Have you tries using the itch.io app? It's will handle downloading of the game for you and might be a simpler workaround to getting the game running.

Hope things get sorted for you soon.

- Andrew

Glad it worked out! Thank you so much for playing!

- Andrew

We will be participating in the Summer Sale, yes!

- Andrew

Hi, Leonora!

We don't currently have plans to distribute a Linux or Android version as we don't have the resources to make sure it's a quality experience on either of those platforms.

- Andrew

Hi MopfinSmiley!

We've had a few reports of computer setups that have this issue and we believe it may be related to out audio middleware not initializing correctly. I'm looking into the best way to handle this but it will take some time. In the meantime, are you using headphones or another audio device? Some players have had luck by changing the audio output in windows to a different device before booting the game.

When a fix is ready we will update and post to let everyone know it's been addressed.

- Andrew

Hi, the.blue.bunny!

Sorry you are running into this. UnityPlayer.dll is necessary to run the game as it contains the code for the engine we use and is bundled with the zip of the game.  I just double checked to be sure, and the windows downloads (both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions) have the dll at the root of the zip file. Can you check whether the UnityPlayer.dll is still beside the morticianstale.exe file wherever you have it extracted?

If you've extracted everything but the dll is missing, something may be moving or deleting it. You'll need the correct version of the dll for the game to run, so taking the dll from another source likely won't work (and I would strongly recommend not using any UnityPlayer.dll files you may find on the internet as they may be malicious).

Do you have antivirus software running? It's possible that it is quarantining the file when it gets extracted.

- Andrew

Hey everyone, I just wanted to follow up on my previous post to let you know we are currently on sale on Steam if you are interested in picking it up there! It's 75% off for the Summer of Pride event, which puts the game at $2.87 Canadian (about 2 dollars in USD).

Again, apologies for keeping itch and Steam separated, but for those that mentioned being willing to pay a couple bucks for a key, this is your chance!

- Andrew

Unfortunately, I don't think that particular fix worked in our case. That said, the fix was fairly simple and the game has been updated so that no workaround should be necessary anymore!

- Andrew

Hi LaughingMan!

If you could, please redownload the latest macOS version of the game. We believe the issue has been properly resolved now!

- Andrew

Hi ebrood!

Looks like the issue was unrelated to Gatekeeper! We pushed an update that should fix the problem, though!

- Andrew

Hi felixforma!

Just followin up to let you know that we just pushed an update to our itch page for macOS. The issue should be resolved now, but let us know if that isn't the case!

- Andrew

I just wanted to let you know that we just pushed an update to our itch page for macOS! If the issue persists, feel free to let me know, but we are hopefully we got it right this time! 😅

- Andrew

Hi fewderpewders,

I just wanted to let you know that we just pushed an update to our itch page for macOS that we believe should fix the issue!

- Andrew

That is much appreciated and I'm glad it seems to working as intended now!

I'll continue looking into things on my end. I know that I have had issues with antivirus and other software causing issues with how the game runs, though nothing performance related.  If it ever acts up again, feel free to let us know!

- Andrew

Hi everyone!  I just wanted to let you know that the issue should be fixed!  We've posted about the fix in the devlog as well!

The dialogue should now appear differently and let you run the game!

Thank you for your patience with this!

- Andrew

Thanks for this update jschulta27!  That actually sounds like an issue on our end but is actually very helpful in fixing the issue for everyone.  We're going to do a bit more testing but hopefully this helps get a fix out sooner.

-Andrew

Hey, AWSMDAWSOM25!

Sorry to hear the game seems to be acting up on your computer. This is definitely not expected behaviour. Would you mind helping us out by letting us know what operating system you are on and what version of the game you are running (32 or 64)? Also, what resolution is your monitor and what resolution the game running at?

Thanks!
-Andrew

Hey, everyone!

Unfortunately, for a bunch of logistical reasons on our end, we decided to not give away Steam keys with out itch.io sales.

That said, for those of you who showed interest in paying for a key, I would recommend wishlisting the game as we do put it on sale relatively regularly. We have a few sales coming up soon that will make the game fairly affordable on Steam!

UPDATE: June 9th 2020

I am pleased to let everyone know the issue should now be resolved. If you download the latest version of the game for macOS, those of you running Catalina will receive a different popup which will then allow you to launch the game.

Thank you so much for waiting for this and for those of you who helped us solve the issue!

- Andrew

Original Post Below

Hi, everyone!

I realize some of you are very excited to play the game and are upset that the game isn't running on your computers running the latest macOS. I just wanted to let you know that we are aware of the issues still effecting the game when running on Catalina. We are in the process of investigating the issue, but it may take a little bit of time.

I will be posting any updates on the matter here as it will be easier to find for new players instead of digging through our bug reporting forum.

Thank you for your patience and for your interest in playing our game!

-Andrew

Hi LaunghingMan19,

It looks like our fix for Catalina wasn't effective and we are looking into it again.

Since you are on 10.14, there is an easier solution if you are comfortable allowing your computer run all programs (as opposed to just ones from the mac store). You can find this option in the security of your mac. By allowing programs downloaded form the internet, it should allow you to launch the game from a warning that pops up after attempting to run the app.

-Andrew

Hey, emptyivy!

Would you be able to you share a screenshot with us and let us know what version (Windows 32bit. Windows 64bit, or macOS) you are running?

Thanks!
- Andrew

Hi fewderpewders!

The game is currently having some problems with the latest mac operating system. While we thought we had already addressed the issues, clearly I made a mistake! I'll be looking into this but will need some time to figure it out. I'll update you when we have a fix.

Thank you for your patience!

- Andrew
