the perfect loop doesn't exi-

Yeah! There will definitely be a post-jam version

PJ13 was fun

The art was really nice, and using a premade art pack during a jam can give super nice results (as it did in yours). The pack works well with the game and it is really cool, so it's not a very big deal, but your other art is super nice too.

I think a post-jam version might benefit from some of your own art (not sure about the style but your hand-drawn looking style is pretty cool) and maybe speech bubbles above the NPCs (I know you had problems with anti-aliasing in pixel art but post-jam it might be fixable).

The idea is great and really fun to play, so it's just these minor things. I loved your game! (and thanks again for your review of mine!)

Super fun! loved the graphics

The movement was super unique, loved it!

Hey there DataPotato,

First of all, thanks for your great rating of my game (can't wait to make a post-jam version), so I got to repay you with a full review of yours, too.

Let's go!

Theme

There were other people on the island, so not fully isolated, but that seems like kind of the point of the game, wanting to be isolated but there's more people around. Being a cannibal might also make you more isolated (at least all the cannibals I know are) but this didn't seem to be really explored in the game (having NPCs use their dialogue to react to you eating their friends (I know thats complicated for a game jam game (wow we're three layers deep in parentheses))).

Overall, I think your game fit the theme pretty well, could have been a bit better, but I feel like I'm not seeing a ton of isolation in the game.

Fun

This game was really fun. Like really really fun. Driving a train around an island, hitting people with it, then eating them? It was super nice to play and the "people eaten" count gave a nice sense of progress. I would play an entire 10-part series of this. I spent like 20 minutes just driving around, hitting things, and vibing to the absolute banger of a background song playing. That leads into...

Sound

Hey did you see that cool segue I did there?

Anyways the sound was great! I don't know how much you made (the text was cut off on the title screen) but the song was super catchy and the sounds, especially the hitting people sound, were super punchy. The sound added a ton to the game and made it feel like I was a real cannibal driving a train on an island (I swear I'm about to have the weirdest dream about this tonight).

Art

The art style was super charming (I'm a sucker for bright pixel art games). I felt like I was just having some fun with the people on the island, and not eating them. The title screen was by far the best I've seen in this jam, super creative to have the buttons be the tops of buildings (but was the settings button supposed to do anything?). Using a premade art pack is completely valid for a jam, but if you're already going the pixelated route, making your own art for a five-day jam might have gotten you one more star.

Mechanics

The game was super fun to play and replay to read all the dialogue, definitely one of my favorites. I feel like I could drive a real derailed train now if I was in that situation (I hope I won't be, but I kind of hope I will). Eating the huge guy was an... interesting part of the game. The mechanics could have been a bit deeper (also using mouse controls that are based on the player's position with no visual indication is a bit unintuitive) but they worked with everything else to make the game pretty cohesive and enjoyable!

Conclusion

Overall, your game was really nice, all the elements fit together well, and the soundtrack was exquisite! Can't wait for a possible post-jam version (and a possible DataPotato video on the jam)!

Thanks so much for your comments on my game, they'll definitely help me improve that game and others I make in the future.
