hahaha I love difficulty but I might admit I ragequitted... I'm probably coming back tomorrow for more, cause after a few levels it felt too challenging for my skills.
Love the idea. I would perhaps make it a bit easier, or at least at the beginning so you get used to it.
Also, I love how when you die you leave the boat broken there, superb.
Wow, this game was very original, really. I love how you have approached ghosts + guiding light, amazing.
The levels feel a bit disconnected, sometimes it feels like you've been pushed out of the map and now you are somewhere else but I think you were teleported to the new level? Not sure about that, that was a bit confusing.
Perhaps a larger map with savepoints would have felt better? Maybe that's what there were?
Apart from that, the game is very nice, love the approach!
Needless to say the art department was sublime. I love the pixel art. The feeling of the bar was great, the animations, the characters that came and went. Visually this game is delicious.
While the art was great, the game gets a bit repetitive. Sometimes it's confusing to know what to feed the clients, especially when a monsters speaking an alien language arrives at the bar :D I know the colours of the letters have meaning, but for a jam I'd make that clear enough that in the first run you know what do do, sort of.
The drag and drop I see I could have used right click so I won't mention anything there since you added a single button to buy, good thing.
There are a lot of combinations and ingredientes, maybe adding a few different sprites for the results would have been nice. Like 3 or 4 depending on the ratio of the strength and disgustingness.
The game is very original, it's an approach I haven't seen yet in this jam, so very cool!
Keep the good work!
Hey Mat, I played the game again and I have to say I'm glad I did. I actually managed to escape the house this time.
The main problem I see, is that people might stop playing before you get to the engaging part of the game. But once you reboot the house a few times and start walking through labyrinths with the combination of flashlight and flash grenades the game is actually very fun.
I had a few issues with the doors the first time I played cause I was investigating the house and got out of light and couldn't get out and that's one of the things that frustrated me the first time.
But I have to say the game was very fun after you pass the beginning. I'd love to see more levels and a bit of story that leads to an end that explains everything.
As mentioned, the graphics are very cute, I love them. The lights are very nicely integrated with the game. The ghosts respond well to the light.
Great game!
Alright, I needed to come back and properly leave a comment this time.
First of all, the art in the intro is amazing. Hand made nice drawings telling the story, superb! And the music gives it a very nice ambience.
The gameplay while simple is fun. You have a some different towers to build. It's a bit chaotic and keeps you engaged all the time because if you stop for a moment you are done.
I found the game a bit difficult, I was a bit overwhelmed by the hordes at some point. They started destroying my towers and I couldn't keep up.
Also, one thing I would improve would be the fire animations of some towers. The one that creates explosions block a big chunk of the screen and that makes you get a bit lost with what's there. You don't know if there are enemies or if you character is being attacked, etc.
The menu with the three options is nice, you can easily navigate through your weapons, the tower build and the type of towers. About the towers, I would have radically changed the design in the selection menu and I would have let the player maybe stop the game while looking at the screen to think about the strategy. There is a pause menu, which I found out just now, but it blocks the view.
It's a very good game, no bugs that I have seen, building options, autogenerated hordes of enemies, movable character so you don't get bored by just building so you can actively fight, great graphics in the intro. Very nice game!
Great game for a jam. The graphics are nice, the music is nice although perhaps not eerie enough for the ghost ambience and the gameplay is very fun. I made it to the end in easy and I died two times :D
First thing to mention is, there are no visible bugs! To me, this is a +1 in a jam game.
The leveling system is nice, you can make the game easier if you feel it's getting too difficult. You have all the time in the world to build the character while filling the crystals which to me is something to thank for, I hate when they impose a timer on you because I prefer to enjoy the game at my pace. So well done!
There are plenty of enemies, there is a boss, the enemies have well defined different mechanics. The animation on the yellow one is very nice. The idea of the green one hiding in the tree is superb! Although it took me a bit to realise what I had to do it was very nice to discover I could bash into the tree and get that little green fellow out.
While being a simple game, it's very polished, as mentioned no bugs, everything runs smoothly. Overall a great jam game, really.
If I had to mention something for improvements, and this is perhaps more my liking than a proper improvement, the controller was a bit confusing at times. As in, move with W and use the mouse for directions. I understand the reasoning was to be able to actually move 360, but I wouldn't mind having wasd and move in a 8-axis.
Another thing that was confusing, once the boss hides again, I was missing a message saying you need to fill the crystals again. The first time I thought the game had ended and I was just left there to play around, which I did and found out the crystals were empty again so the boss was still alive.
Again, this is a fantastic game!
"was it somewhere outside?"
I believe the last item is a token for the ghost kid that is outside. That item is upstars, then to the right, to the right again and then to the left. It's an old watch located by the TV if I don't recall wrong.
"some checkpoints"
Yeah we've been suggested that. It's a great idea and I can't believe we dind't think of that ourselves. But believe me when I tell you I won't forget about this in the next jam :D
"The ghost was sometimes killing me through a wall or the flashlight wasn't immediately working"
Yeah we had many issues with this and were trying to do something to avoid hitting the ghost through walls etc. We used a raycast in the end to not go through walls but it wasn't enough. We should have used a combination of an area plus a raycast to fix hitting the ghost through walls while being able to hit the ghost with the light easily. A week seems like a lot, but it's not haha
Very thank you for your time, as I mentioned to another person, seeing these comments helps me to understand what to write to other people and how to leave feedback to other people. We are sort of new to jams.
I will try your game again and I will try to leave another comment with more feedback (Although I actually had your game in the list to be tried again cause I wanted to see if I could get out of the house when the shadows appeared without being killed :D)
"The light was frustrating to use in tight corridors and doorways"
Yeah, we wanted to add like the feeling of having a real light and you get close to the wall you move the hand but it ended up being a bit frustraiting especially in the stairs
"Checkpoints please!"
Can you believe we didn't think of this? It would have been easy to implement, how did we miss that?
Very thank you for your feedback, I haven't done many jams and this is my first time in this one and this feedback actually helps me to know what to do when giving feedback to other people. Thank you so much for the time spent playing our game and rating it. Best of luck and I'll have another go at your game and will try to leave a better feedback cause I feel the comment I left was very simple.
Thanks!
