The demo just dropped! We've submitted it to Steam for review, which should take a few days. In the meantime, we wanted to put it here on itch to kick off the demo speedrun challenge! We're all so excited to share this with you just in time for Halloween!

I'm adding a new devlog this week to go over a few things:

  1. Meet the team behind the pixels
  2. Why this story? Why this game?
  3. How's it differ from other Metroidvanias?
  4. New cadet animations
  5. New & improved game mechanics

New official cover art is up now! The old cover was taken down as well as the old screenshots. We're in the middle of making fresh screenshots, gifs and videos with sound showing all the new artwork and improved environment, now with bioluminescent marine life! Follow the project here for more updates.

Working on a big update coming this summer. I'm bringing some help aboard for programming. The game will have smoother mechanics, additional abilities, weapons, an additional boss, revised enemy AI, a whole new map, and cutscenes to add a cinematic touch to the action-driven narrative. The next update will go over a new ability the cadet, Flash Pan, can use: the harpoon gun.

The harpoon gun will add two new actions to the arsenal. First, it can be used as a stronger weapon than the flare for enemies that can't be scared off by a flare shot. The second way to use this is as a dash. The cadet will be able to tie a line to the harpoon so that when fired, it pulls the cadet a set distance. This will help the player move faster and specifically will allow the player to advance through an area where the increased speed will be crucial to the cadet's chances at survival. I'll continue posting updates on Twitter and on here.

This latest version, v1.21 fixes audio transition bugs on the intro cutscene and also fixes an issue accessing the walkthrough on the title screen. This version also added Xbox controller support. I'm play testing to find more bugs so if you find one, please let me know either here or on Twitter, whatever is easier for you. Thank you for playing!

Fully playable version has just been uploaded here now that voting has ended. Thank you to all who checked it out and special thanks to all those who provided feedback. It has helped me so much in cleaning up and improving this latest release. Thank you!

Thank you for playing! I really appreciate the feedback and encouragement, it means a ton.  The next update will be released when the voting ends for this game jam in about 17 hours.  It fixes all of this and adds all the content I wanted to add in but didn't get to. The game is fully playable in this next update v1.2.

yup that lingering in the air was so clutch! I loved how you guys did that, gotta use the powers of gravity =D I enjoyed the challenge of the mechanic and it made movement really fun

I really appreciate the feedback. Thank you for playing! The full version of the game (v1.2) will be up as soon as voting ends for the game jam. Here are the features that have been added:

1. Fully fleshed out story

2. Sharks added

3. Boss fight (final battle)

4. Cutscenes with 8-bit speech and all are skippable

5. General walkthrough (accessible through the pause menu

6. Fixed bugs regarding door animations, SFX timing,

6. Solved aimless exploration, rooms without purpose

I'm working on adding additional content to the game as well that will feature a new playable character, new items, new places to explore and new enemies.

I really liked the platforming mechanics, the only add would be coyote timing imo. the way the player stops when landing from a jump is superb! it allows for very precise jumps even without the coyote jump. i was super impressed by that. I look forward to seeing the next iteration. Cheers

Controls were a trip, I found the key is to let gravity help in movement while dashing. Really neat way to move around. The only issue was in its precision when hitting objects, made it tough. When I got to the boss like enemy, it made a ton of sense to have controls like that as it made the battle pretty intense! Nice work

Loved the graphics and how the music went with it so well. Also enjoyed the mechanics and the fun platforming. I accidently ran into the spikes hahahaha. I look forward to where this goes. That save function is super nifty, nice work!

Thank you for playing The Last Cadet! The last release (v1.1) in time for the game jam still had some bugs and missing items.  I apologize sincerely for the experience. I have fixed all the known bugs that would crash the game as well as missing items. No more aimless movement, I'm so sorry you had to deal with that.

v1.2 will be released on  Tuesday June 22nd right after voting ends at 5:00 am (PST). It is ready and can be played until the end as intended. I really appreciate you playing the game and hope you play the v1.2 when it releases on  Tuesday June 22nd. If you do in fact play it, I'd love to hear your thoughts on what you liked and didn't like as well as some recommended changes. I'm still going to be adding to content to this game so any feedback is greatly welcomed.

What up team! I had fun jumping up the platforms and using that wall jump and double jump feature. I also liked how the rocks break the large square blocks, looks so satisfying to watch it explode! The music fits so well. I posted a clip on Twitter.

sweet looking forward to this. I'll be playing the current build until then. Cheers on the release team Bearscythe!

Couldn't finish the final boss battle in time so version 1.1 will be the last version for this game jam. I'll still be finishing the game this week however, so the final boss battle against the monster will indeed be included. I added a screen shot to give a glimpse

The first update has just been released. The only bugs left I could find are in the boss battle at the very end of the game and the Sharks AI. I am working on fixing this as I type this. The next version should be ready within the next 3 hours just in time before the 24 hour grace period ends. I want to thank everyone looking at my game. It's my first game to see release so I've been very happy with all the feedback received. It helps me make better content in the future.

this version had so many bugs but they have all been fixed in the newest version, 1.1. This new version will be uploaded shortly now in the next 30 minutes. After that, one more update will come prior to the 24 hour grace period ending at 5:00 am 6/16/21, which will fix the remaining bits of content I had to cut out to keep the game in working order.
