Immediate Crashing/Not Loading At All

I am so interested in this game, but for some reason I can't get it to play on my nor my partner's laptops. For me, it crashes very quickly after startup, and on my partner's computer, the game gets stuck and can't progress past the splash screens. There is sound but a never-ending black background with a very faint loading ... in the bottom corner.

Our drivers are completely updated. I received this game in a bundle some time ago so I don't have a Steam key, which I noticed you mentioning in other posts.

I know you may not be able to do anything to help here, but I thought maybe knowing our specs might be useful somehow?

My specs:

  • GeForce RTX 3060
  • i7-11800H @ 2.30GHz
  • 32 GB RAM
  • Windows 10

My partner's:

  • AMD Radeon R7 M440
  • i7 7500U @ 2.70GHz
  • 16 GB RAM
  • Windows 10

Thanks for this information! The game is definitely having problems these days, on both the Itch and the Steam version, but most of the time when I ask for people's specs they don't reply, so I really appreciate it.

The version on Steam is a slightly newer version, but both are having problems. Leave it with me for a day or two because I might have an idea...

Hi again sheycell. Unfortunately it looks like I'm not going to be able to get to the bottom of this or release a new version. Sorry about that. It seems like there's something broken between certain versions of Unreal 4, or at least some games, and something that has changed in Windows, drivers or similar in the last year or so.

I've investigated it about as far as I can, and then today realised that the Bonbon source code didn't survive a hard-drive crash a few years ago, so I wouldn't be able to make an update even if I figured it out. (I learned a hard lesson about back-ups and source control that keeps coming back to haunt me! 😅)

Here are some things you could try, if you like:

  • Download the "Unreal redist installer" from the Downloads page, run it and see if it helps.
  • Start the game by right-clicking Bonbon_DRMFree_2_2.exe and choosing "Run As Administrator".
  • Open the properites for Bonbon_DRMFree_2_2.exe and on the Compatibility tab, try setting compatibility mode for Windows 8.

But if those don't you feel you need to request a refund then of course that's absolutely fine. 😀

Sorry for the late reply, I don't log into itch.io often so this slipped my mind. I did give your suggestions a try, and the game lasted maybe a minute longer, but ultimately still crashes. Oh well, these things happen. I'd like to give it a shot in a virtual machine, but that's a project for another day. Anyway, thanks for your input! And sorry to hear about your hard-drive, I know how devastating it is to lose data. Take care. :)

Hi!!!!! New “BonBon” player here. I found this game from Jacob Geller’s new YouTube video. Came across all of these issues you’re facing as well! I also came across these issues in a game I played a while ago called “Perfect Vermin”. After doing some research on that game, I found that turning off your Wi-Fi, will fix the problem! Not quite sure why, but I turned it off and… what do you know, a working game! This popped into my mind while furiously restarting “Bonbon” for the 19th time, so I went ahead and tried it.

TURNING OFF YOUR WI-FI WILL MOST LIKELY BONBON MAKE WORK ON YOUR PC!!!! (WE USED THE ITCHIO DOWNLOAD, NOT STEAM IF THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE FYI)

Hi Basil! That's amazing, thank you so much.
This has been destroying my brain for some time, and now I have a work-around to tell people.

(I guess the issue is with the Unreal 4 crash-reporting tool, which usually wants firewall permissions even if there's no crash and it does literally nothing. Disconnecting from the internet would disable the crash-reporting tool. Stoopid Unreal.)

Oh my goodness, @Basil, thank you so much!!! I have no idea what the relation is, but I tried turning off my Wi-Fi like you said, and the game worked! I'm so excited I can finally play this!!

Glad it's working for you!
