GREETINGS itch.io!

I've seen a lot of books and book writers on this website, but I've never seen them take up the light of day. But not anymore. THIS is a place where authors like you and I can get to know each other.

For first-time posters:

  • State your name (online handle here)
  • Favorite genres to read/watch/play
  • Favorite genres to write
  • Type of Stories you write (poems, nonfiction, AUs, Fanfiction, longform stories, short stories, haikus, comics)
  • Talk about any upcoming projects you're working on
  • Book Recommendations, including books found on this site

I'll go first.

My name's Mr. Toontastic. I'm the creator and host of a collection of characters and stories called "Jean-Luc & Friends." You can find my works here: Goon Toon Books on itch.io

My favorite genres of stories to read and watch are mainly comedies. I love watching slapstick comedies especially. Even outside of cartoons and independent animations, there's some hilarious hits out there. When not indulging in copious amount of comedies of the physical and verbal variety, I love good action-adventure tales, sometimes with a little bit of horror to incite the danger up ahead.

When writing, I typically lean towards comedic characters in off-beat scenarios. Sometimes, I write akin to a sitcom. Other times, I write more in line with classic slapstick as seen in works such as Looney Tunes or early [adult swim] material. Once in a while, I write poetry as well. Currently, I'm working on a couple of new projects. Some of them are still in the pre-planning stages, but one I can discuss now is a story called CAT UNIVERSITY.

  • Cat University is a story about a young street cat who gets mixed up in a university full of pure-breeds. The young cat named Mogger is a Russian Blue cat with a skip in his step, but not a lot going on in the brain department. The university's goal is to create a new breed of cat society - the kind of society that makes cats the dominant species. Because when everyone owns a cat, who needs other animals? The question at the end of the day is if Mogger is ready to add to the cause, or if he's about to uncover secrets that could change the course of animal kind.

If there's any book that I could recommend, there's three:

  • JETX - Created by CrazylunaticXD is a story about the young titular speedster as he saves the world from the conniving Malicious Fingers and his attempts to convert the world into a mechanical dictatorship. The comic is fast, frantic, and full of that classic Saturday Morning heart. It's got the best essences of Dragon Ball Z, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Mega Man. JETX especially takes influence from the latter two entries, especially from the best of the Archie and IDW variants of Sonic and Mega Man. I love its style and would love to see it become bigger than it currently is.

  • The PlayStation 2 Encyclopedia - Created by DaddaRuleKonge is an encyclopedia about the PlayStation 2 and its multitude of games. The PS2 was my first console ever (though I used to game a lot on my Windows 98). While I'm more invested in my current hardware (at least as current as the PS4, STEAM, and Nintendo Switch), I find that I've missed out on a lot of games. As our current gaming landscape grows and expands, I like to go back to where I started just to learn about the games that I may have missed. It's amazing how so many games are left sitting around, unloved or poorly preserved, so to read an encyclopedia about the games I missed is a great time.

  • Fahrenheit 451 - Created by Ray Bradbury. I think we're more aware of its premise about book burning, but its also about independence and thinking for yourself. We may not be immune to propaganda, but we should have an open mind about our place in this world and the importance of culture and preservation of our great works. For me, that means a lot, especially when considering how we preserve media today, including video games.

  • Invasion of the Road Weenies and Other Warped and Creepy Tales - Created by David Lubar. Now, this is a childhood book. It's absurd, its got bits of horror, and its just an overall warped story with one message.... DON'T BE A WEENIE!!

Let's get to know each other!

I can't wait to read some of your work and invest in some of your recommended books! Until then...

BE TOONTASTIC~!

Ooooh, awesome idea, thank you for creating this thread ! I don't have time to write a proper presentation post this week but be assured I will answer ASAP bc I'm really hyped about it. I can't wait to meet other writers here on itch.io 😄

Nice to meet a fellow writer! First, you're welcome. I've seen a lot of writers and comic creators publish their work here, but never have I seen any forum dedicated to use meeting up. I can't wait to meet other writers here as well. I'm curious as to what you make in particular. I might have to take a peek because I'm curious!

Let's hope for more fellow writers joining this thread!

Greetings.

I am Edwin Black, writer of weird things.  Generally speaking, I will read most any genre, though I have a liking more toward the literary and the macabre. This might explain why I am a horror writer, tending toward ghost stories, folk horror, and eco-horror, though I also enjoy experimenting with other subgenres and things outside. I have had a couple of short stories published elsewhere.

At the moment I am working on a new short story - a caper, of all things! I hope to successfully submit it to a particular publication, though I will likely post it up here if it gets rejected. Other than that, I will be working on my second novel. I cannot go into detail about that at the moment as it is early doors. I have another manuscript that I am ready to release at the right time. It tells of a house that has been standing for much too long, a house that can only hate. It ought to be out by the end of the year.

I look forward to my time here - Itch seems to be a bit friendlier to surreal and offbeat art than other places, and I do hope to bump into more of my horror brethren here in the coming time!

Greetings Edwin,

Ahhh, horror. While it isn't typically my forte, I do rather enjoy some stories that send fear to the mind. I'm more of a fan of stories that revolve around body horror as well as one that test the psychology of the mind. When I read or write something featuring those subjects, I tend to ask myself how far will a man push himself to achieve his goal.

I'm a fan of capers. While you can't share details yet, I will await said caper whether it be available in my local book store or here on itch.io!

I agree that itch is quite friendly to surreal artists than most online services out there. Heck, I'm a longtime user of a place called Tapas Media, and lets just say that despite being open to a lot of webcomics, the site essentially became more like current-day YouTube more than anything else. I'm here because I wanted to break away from that mold and do something to attract an audience more fitting to my strange style. I hope to bump into more strange and surreal fellows such as you too!

Happy writing!

(phew, I finally found some time to write this post X)

Well hello there! I'm Row' (they/them), a passionate hobbyist writer who wish they had more time to work on their endless list of projects!

Spoiler alert: I'm a French native-speaker so I write... in French. Pretty much all of my writings here on itch are in French. Though, if you're looking for English content, you might take a look at MIRROR|ЯOЯЯIM, a rpg card game about summoning your reflection and conversing with it. It's still in development, but you can totally play it if you like! Now back to our main subject:

Favorite genres to read/watch/play

I read mostly fiction. I have a big soft spot for fantastic litterature, mysteries, magical realism... Well, pretty much anything that takes me away from reality for the time of a reading.  Although, this doesn't stop me from appreciating "realist" stories, especially when they're set in historical settings and/or focused on women's experiences and point-of-views.

Horror stories also have a special place in my reader's heart. Particularly ghost tales, weird horror, lovecraftian horror and folk-horror.

Spicy LGBTQ+ romances are my guilty pleasure, especially when they're mixed with a thrilling plot or with one of my favorite genres!

Type of Stories you write (poems, nonfiction, AUs, Fanfiction, longform stories, short stories, haikus, comics)

Most of my writings are original fictions with fantastic/magic elements. That said, I do have fun creating fanfictions of a quite famous british detective and his doctor roommate... I write mainly short stories, even though I'm working on a novel at the moment.

I gave interactive fiction a try a few months ago by writing a real simple story on Twine and I'm eager to explore this format more (I just need more tiiiime...) Also last year I collaborated with 3 of my friends on a med-fan rural-drama LARP-scenario. We played it last summer and now we are looking forward to develop a new scenario in the same universe

Finally, when inspiration strikes, I jot down some random words on a paper and call it poetry.

Talk about any upcoming projects you're working on
I'm currently working on a long-form novel. I can't tell much about it since it's still in early-early alpha and I haven't figured out the whole plot yet xD What I can tell : it's a spicy M/NB rom-tasy comedy set in a small French village at the turn of the XIXth century, involving a hung-up young priest, a slutty demon and a black goat.

Book Recommendations, including books found on this site

Fallen Grace- by Mary Hooper
I read this book like 10 years ago but I still remember it as a striking story. It's a dark, moving and deeply touching reading, in addition to be richly documented.
"London, 1861. Grace Parkes has just had to do a terrible thing. Having given birth to an illegitimate child, she has travelled to the famed Brookwood Cemetery to place her small infant's body in a rich lady's coffin. Following the advice of a kindly midwife, this is the only way that Grace can think of to give something at least to the little baby who died at birth, and to avoid the ignominy of a pauper's grave"

The Less than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal - by E.K Weaver
I re-read it a few months ago and I still love this webcomic with my whole heart! If I should name a single story that made me want to write queer romances, this would the one. It's funny, touching and the ar-style never ceases to amaze me.
"In the span of a single day, Amal calls off his arranged marriage, comes out to his conservative parents, promptly gets disowned, goes on a bender... and wakes up the next morning to find TJ, a lanky, dreadlocked vagrant, frying eggs and singing Paul Simon in his kitchen. TJ claims that the two have made a drunken pact to drive all the way from Berkeley to Providence. As it happens, Amal promised his sister he'd be there for her graduation from Brown University. And TJ, well... TJ has his own reasons. The agreement is simple: Amal does the driving; TJ pays the way - but a 3500 mile journey leaves plenty of time for things to get complicated."

And that's all for now, thank you for reading! I'm eager to meet you, fellow writers, because you and your writings definitely deserve some spotligh ! (Yes, trust me, you do!) Have a great day!

You write very inquisitive and intriguing works. It's nice to meet you! I think I might take up that Fallen Grace story. It sounds very interesting.

Hello,

I'm Konspiracy (pen name Ginger Davies). I have a lot of things published, both written works and comics. I enjoy lots of things, mostly apocalyptic, 80s, and romance with horror and thriller themes attached, and I tend to write in those realms as well.

I've published a lot of my works, but I only recently started adding anything to itch. I just uploaded chapter 1 of Ark of Time here and I'm hoping to add more of it soon if anyone likes it. Ark of Time

As for recommendations on this site, I highly recommend the visual novel, Where Winter Crows Go. Loved the hell outta that one, and its artwork is fantastic. Plus I'm a sucker for the male character being just the slightest bit insane. :)

Thanks!

Nothing like a good thriller to hit those high-impact dopamine centers. I might just have to check out some of your works!

Thanks! Yea, thrillers are awesome.

Hi. I'm Chandra & I like scifi (& some fantasy) + horror + surrealism (in books, videogames, etc)

I mostly write surrealist horror.  I like to write fantasy  & scifi too (my videogame WIP is fantasy, for example) but mostly I end up doing surrealist horror

I post my flash fiction & short stories on Substack.

Currently I'm working on a zine/ebook which will be a collection of my short fiction with illustrations. The stories are already free to read, but the illustrations will be a new addition (3D art done by myself) & I'll change some portions to be more like a comic too. Kind of an experiment to see what I can do with my writing + art

I haven't read any books from itch.io yet but I'm definitely going to look through some of the recommendations people gave here. But outside of itch, I love the Xenogenesis trilogy by Octavia Butler, ESPECIALLY the second book Adulthood Rites.
