How do I get the itch.io app to recognise the game I downloaded from the itch.io web page

A while ago I couldn't log into the itch.io app, so I downloaded the game from the itch.io webpage. Now that I can log in properly, I tried to get the app to scan and recognise the game I downloaded from the webpage, but that didn't work.

What can I do to get the app to correctly recognise the game I downloaded from the web? Or is there no other way but to download it again in the app?

Sorry if my question is stupid! I don't really know much about this, so thank you for your willingness to read my question!

Please excuse me if my words are hard to read because I use DeepL to translate my broken English!

There does not seem to exist a designated feature for this as on Steam. You could potentially try to add the web version into the install designation where the app usually puts downloaded games into (or create an alternate install location for where your web game is), but I would not recommend this, if it even works at all. The app is meant to add and display games from itch.io that have been made compatible with it, so just adding outside sources may not result in anything working well.

That being said, you can try to check the install location after you downloaded the specific game again and try to add in your save files from the web version, at least.

Edit: I will not make a new post for this as it is not specifically tied to this topic matter anymore, but to anyone reading this: I made a mistake here and the statement 'needs to be made compatible with the itch app' is not true. You can upload it specifically with the butler tool to have smaller updates for both you and your customers, but you can install items which have been uploaded directly to the web page as well.

Thank you for your reply!

I have actually tried moving the web downloaded game to the app's default download location or to a download location I added and then letting the app scan to recognise it, but that didn't work. That's why I'm asking for help.

Of course, this does not affect my ability to play the game normally. It's just that games downloaded by the itch.io app seem to update automatically, so I'd like to try the app recognising games I've downloaded from the web and updating them automatically as well.

If not, I'll consider downloading the update manually or re-downloading the game in the app.

Anyway, thanks for reading and answering my question! Best of luck with your health! Have a great life! All the best!

Is there even a feature to verify an installation? If the app manages the installation I would expect such a feature. And from what I read about the app, there is not really a thing like making a game compatible with the app. Not as a requirement that is. I believe one could create a manifest for the app, but that is not mandatory for it to work.

Thank you for your reply!

I'm sorry that I don't know if I understood what you meant because of the translation I used.

In fact, the games games downloaded from the webpage are playing fine. It's just that the games downloaded from the itch.io app seem to update automatically, so I'd like to try to get the app to recognise the games I've downloaded from the web and be able to update them automatically.

I've tried moving the web downloaded game to the app's default download location or to a download location I've added and then letting the app scan to recognise it, but this hasn't worked. That's why I'm asking for help.

If not, I'll consider downloading the update manually or re-downloading the game in the app.

Anyway, thanks for reading and answering my question! I also wish you good health! Have a great life! All the best!

Games installed by the app do not update automatically. They are updated by the app. For this the app has to know the game somehow.

You can scan install locations for games, but I suspect this feature is for games that were previously installed by the itch app.
