Seeking Fresh Ideas for 2D Game Mechanics (Solo Beginner Developer)

Hey everyone! I'm a solo beginner developer in the early stages of creating a 2D game and I'm looking for unique and fresh game mechanics to incorporate. What are some innovative mechanics you've seen or thought of? All ideas are welcome!

Thank you in advance ....

I'd start by making something simple and just make something. Oddly enough, sometimes there will appear a bug or quirk in the game that, rather than fixing it, you actually realize you can expand it into a feature. I feel those implementations are the most fun and organic.

Thank you for the response.

There are many new unique and fresh ideas to be brought into games. The problem is how to shape them into something fun or engaging. For instance, you could make cleaning game in which you are tasked with cleaning rooms. You need to sweep or suck dirts and dusts with your tool. You can move furnitures to reach hard to reach spots. However, you aren't allowed to break anything.

If you’re a complete novice, I wouldn’t worry too much. But you could take a look at early arcade games for inspiration–many of these games were very simple (and thus, not too hard for a beginner to implement) and since the medium hadn’t really ‘solidified’ there were lots of concepts and ideas that didn’t stick around. Some of those ideas disappeared because they were shit, mind you, but I reckon there’s still untapped potential to be found.

I once tried making an endless runner kind of game where the player is always moving in one direction and you can't control him, but you control the camera. Whenever player reaches a side of the viewport ( the camera ) he will enter from the other side. And you have to use this mechanic cleverly to avoid spikes and obstacles and at the same time keep the player inside your area of vision.

I left this project haf completed because of some personal problems and never got around to completing it, and now I've kinda lost the interest in the game, but still think it's a cool idea. So maybe someone else can use it.

If you're planning on making a game with a similar mechanic, I'd  LOVE to play it.
