0.3.0: I don't get the travel UI

I really have some issues with understanding the travel UI in the newest version. I got my first quest from the notice board to clear out a dungeon. So how do I get there? I guess that's what the button "Travel" is for in the Mansion UI.

So I click on "Travel".

There is the "Character List" panel on the top and an "Information" panel below. The natural order to process UIs is from top to bottom, so I try to interact with the character list first. I guess I have to select the characters which I want to let travel. So I click on some characters and... nothing happens. Even though there is that hand-hover icon which implies something should happen when I click on a character. Well.

OK, that character list doesn't seem to get me anywhere. So what else do we have here. Let's check out the "Information" panel. "Characters selected: 0" (well, I would be glad if I could fix that but I haven't figured out how to yet). "Select location to proceed" and "Location Select". OK, let's try select a location first.

I click on "Location Select" and the character panel gets replaced by a location panel. I select the location where I want to travel. Nice, so what next? The Information panel now says "Select Characters to send". Great idea. But how? There is no character list anymore. It's hidden by the location picker. How do I get back? Right-Click? No, that gets me completely out of the travel system. Maybe I have to "Confirm" my location selection with the big "Confirm" button? Good idea, but it's grayed out.

After a while of wild experimentation I figure out by accident that I need to click on "Location Select" again to close the location selector. Not very intuitive, but well. Now I can interact with the character list and select which characters to move. Now that mysterious "Confirm" button becomes active. I guess I figured it out after all.

So after a couple puzzling minutes my characters appear to be "Relocating: in 2 hours".  I finish my turn twice and... I guess the characters are there. Their location in the character list appears as "Threat - Goblins" and I have messages in the ingame log that my characters arrived.

So how do I get them to investigate that threat? No new location visible in the top bar, no button or anything to get them to do something at that new location.

By the way: There is an error message in the console window. So perhaps after all that wrestling with the UI I just stumbled upon a bug? Or is there something I don't find either?

Edit: Lol, I just saw that you released an update literally while I was testing this. I tried to do this again with 0.3.0c and the bug appears to be fixed. But the travel UI is still as unintuitive to me as before.

How I would suggest to improve the UI:

  • Do not show non-functional UI. Either let the user pick their characters before they pick the location or don't show the character list before the player can interact with it.
  • Offer a more intuitive way to get from the location selector to the character selector. Either by:
    • Following the "right-click means back" UI pattern like elsewhere to close the location selector
    • Showing both the character selector and the location selector on the same screen
    • Adding an explicit confirm-button to the location selector (or even better a "select characters" button)

Yeah, travel system doesn't seem super intuitive to me either.

I figured out how to use it after some bumbling around, but still.

A winning option might be to just show the location and the characters FUNCTIONALLY at the same time.

Update for 0.30.1: Now the locations panel is the first thing the player sees when clicking on "travel", which prevents the confusion of the non-functional character list. But now it is even less intuitive for the player to get out of that menu. The player has to click on "Location Select" to get out of the location selection.

Maybe rename the button to "Accept Location" and move it below the "Available Resources"?
