Track description | Creative process
This is my first time trying out Logic Pro instead of Musescore3, so this was an experimental tryout for me. I've tried to keep the beat simple and use 4/4 time, while incorporating some low-pass filters and bubble sounds to reinforce the water element.

Oooh I like the trumpets and the water effects :D I think you may have gone a little too far with the low pass filters, the bass is really present in the mix and can be a bit overpowering (I had to lower the volume when I pressed play). As some other folks mentioned I think I'd prefer a stronger rhythmic emphasis as well to keep driving the tension. Overall great job though, definitely a worthwhile experiment - I think this had really convincing underwater vibes! I like the riff at 1:53 as well, very funky.

Thanks a lot! I have to agree that the bass is overpowering - I went a bit overboard with the bass features I've never been able to use - but its overpowerment had nothing to do with the low pass filters, right? I am glad you like it, thanks again :D

Nice Job, really cool stuff, like the groove, liked a lot the brass section making that slide, probably just the bass is too much loud.

Developer

Thank you! Mixing and mastering has always been a weakness of mine. I don't hear that an instrument is too loud until I make it softer and notice the big improvement it makes.

Good job, it fits this jam and it was a pleasure to listen to your track. I loved the water sfx and the brass. One thing it lacks is the punchiness and groove of the original, with the right synths and drums it would have been closer to the original sounds.

Developer(+1)

Thank you :D. It means a lot to me. I actually never considered making the sounds in line with the original sounds; I just chose some sounds that I liked. That largely had to do with the fact that I never played this game and just wanted to experiment. But that is something I will take into consideration for next time for sure, thanks!

Liked your brass slide, make the sound very groovy!
Nice use of underwater effect + bubble sound, make a real accurate and original transition
I agree with the panning part, would have upgraded the mastering to another level i think!

Developer

Thank you! I hadn't even thought of using panning, it's something I've really never used before. But it's a great idea for next time :D

Cool idea with those slides ending the phrases!

Felt to me a bit that you could utilise more panning in this since a lot of the instruments are playing in the middle. Like for a wild idea/example you could have the harpsichord and saxes panned to opposite sides a bit so the interplay between them at 0:53 gets some more power with the line moving from side to side.

Another thing that might just a subjective thing from my part, but I felt that you could've had a proper kick sound even if you have the 808 bass, just to have the kick give that nice punchy emphasis on the beats. The 808 bass would probably need to be sidechained to the kick to help it punch through, but it would help amp the vibe a bit imo.

For your first track using a daw, really great job!

Having no constant kick can be a good way to increase difficulty? I felt like the groovy rythm was enough, but well, I never played the game sooo...

Developer

Thanks for the in-depth feedback :D

I've barely ever really utilized panning before, so it's a great suggestion of something I can try next time! I like that idea.

I've never used "side-chaining" (nor know what it is), but I'll look it up. I myself felt like the kicks were quite punchy and on-the-beat already, so I am a bit confused about what effect side-chaining will have. Could you elaborate?

Submitted(+1)

just felt to me that having a short and sharp kick playing on the beats would help with emphasizing the rhythm even more.

Side-chaining is just having a compressor on a track responding to the signal of another track, so in this case the 808 bass would have a compressor on it thats responding to the audio fed to it from the kick, lowering the volume of the bass when the kick hits, helping it cut through the bass.

But those are probably not needed, The 808 just didn't feel sharp enough to me on my first listen (If that makea any sekä😅), so i suggested that.

Aha! I now get what you're suggesting. I watched a video on side-chaining, and I believe the effect you are particularly referencing is called a "ducking" effect. It's a great suggestion really, just a shame that I didn't know you could do that. Either way, I learned something new here, so thank you :D

It's a bit confusing to understand how it works (at least it took some time for me to wrap my head around it 😄).

But when you get to grips with it, it's a really great tool to know. I think it's used pretty commonly in electronic music to get that pumping effect with the kick ducking the bass.
