How does your game represent Mode?
You play as a character who can swap between detective mode and mantis shrimp mode. Both can only see clues of their time, either color dot numbers or regular numbers. You then try and find the mode, most recurring number, of both clue types.

The number 8! I am telling you it's the number 8. Loses. But I was sure it was the number 8.

Developer

yeah I've had that happen to me a bunch. I tried to balance it as best as I could to make it possible to work on one level. Would you believe me when I say the most common number is over double the others.

A very novel idea! I'd love to see the core mechanic implemented for things besides counting!

The idea of switching to a mantis shrimp to see more colors and then using what you can see to solve a mystery is a really cool idea. I also respect that you went with the mathematical mode for your theme, as that's a pretty difficult concept to base a game around. There's some definite potential here with these mechanics. I think they would be really fun in an "escape the room" type game.

I like this concept with the mode theme! The detective noire style art and music was very cool too ^^

Well done! Very creative use of "mode" haha

I can definitely see what your idea was, and I think it has potential! At the moment you're just doing the same thing twice (trying to guess the statistical "mode"). But I think trying to fit in that word play actually stood in your way when coming up with ideas. Trying to find something specific in the chaos rather than trying to guess the most common number would've felt more detective-like imo

absolutely agree. I had to fall back on the current iteration. I was the sole visual asset creator, so most of my environmental ideas had to be cut. I also wanted to include a dusting for fingerprints mechanic. That required you to collect dust as the shrimp, but I just didn't have the time. Maybe if I had another full day to work on it.

I enjoyed the idea of switching modes in order to reveal different information. Funny premise too. It took me a few wins to realize I had actually won, since it just puts you back at the main menu (or at least I never saw a victory screen?). I think having some more clear indicators of things like the timer and victory would be good, particularly for those who might be playing with low/no audio.

Developer

Yeah I ran out of time. Most of the graphical Assets were made and added the day before submission. I had a timer set up, but at the time I decided I didn't want one for some reason.

Well, I liked the music. the detective model, and the concept of a detective with his pet mantis shrimp. I get we don't always have enough time to create the game we really wanted to, so given that you even finished it's still an impressive feat! Not to mention some themes really make it hard to come up with great gameplay ideas. Great job in any case!

If you get the time, I'd appreciate your feedback on my game too!

I'm really glad to see someone using the math definition of mode! And I like how it resulted in a multi-layered use of the theme (use different modes of vision to find the mode). Also just a silly (in a positive way) concept that honestly could work as a kids cartoon or comic series. The detective and his shrimp side-kick solving crimes, haha!

That said the gameplay itself I found lacking, mostly in the feedback department. No idea how much time I had, how much time a wrong answer would cost me, and the sound effect for getting the wrong answer sounds like a correct answer type sound. When I got a correct answer, it took me a sec to realize I had actually gotten a correct answer since it didn't tell me I did. I just worried that I accidently insta-closed the defeat screen or something when I popped back to the main menu.

Music was pleasant and present, both of which are high marks for a jam game. And while I'm not sure about anyone else, for me I'd say you had a good font choice for the numbers. I could read them quickly and easily even in shrimp mode.

Overall, good job!

Thanks. I tried more feedback methods but most of them allowed the player to brute force their way through.  I also wanted the detective to have to dust for finger prints and try to find numbers based on the amount of prints. There just wasn't enough time for me to make both the scripts and assets.
