What inspired your games?

My team and I were really inspired by the DARK and TWISTED 90s, and now we're curious: what inspired your game's presentation and design?
https://dyve.itch.io/absolution

I saw this great forum post by Sven von Brand L. that asked developers why they made their game, and thought questions like that could be a great way for us to share our games while getting to talk about them a little more.

We took a lot of inspiration from dark and gritty PSX-era games like Silent Hill and Castlevania: SOTN to inform our game's graphics and presentation. I worked on the UI and  took a lot of inspiration from games like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta for the in-game UI, then for the level opening UI a ton of inspiration from Melty BloodTouhou, and Under Night In-Birth because those games love dumping entire paragraphs of text in their UI.

As for gameplay, we came up with the idea of the ranged attack being similar to Draven's axe catching mechanic from League of Legends - we're really happy with the way it came out and it even surprised us with how the player's ranged projectile can ricochet off of other enemies. It's janky, but I think it's really satisfying when it happens.

I'm really curious to hear if you had any other games that inspired you while creating your entry. Looking forward to hearing all of your responses and playing your games!

For our game The Big Backstage Show we drew inspiration from popular television gameshows such as Family Feud, Weekend millionaire, Take Your Pick. The framework of a (game) host and contestants on stage is a staple in all these shows. But our game let's you place the prizes behind the doors, the part you never get a see on television and that is exactly where we could really improvise and put a lot of creativity in.

As per the music / sound of the game (which I dedicated this jam to), once the setting of a gameshow was established I knew that we needed a live performance band as you see on late night shows. I started making a roster of which instrument the band consists and after began composing the catchy main theme. Just like Family Feud, or any gameshow for that matter you need to hook the audience with an overly dramatic, energetic and most of all catchy song that characterizes the show. From there I started working on the background music, which are more mellow and jazzy to not take the listeners attention away from what is happening on stage.

You can find the OST of our game here, or just play it for yourself!

My game was inspired partially by the cozy game: Unpacking. I didn't want to make a 1-1 clone obviously though, and I'm not the BIGGEST cozy game fan, so I made it into a Cozy/Stealth-Horror game instead.

Hi!

Loved this thread, thanks for being inspired by my question! For Doors, Monsters and Towers we had many inspirations. I am a fan of Monster Taming games, I follow the best Monster Taming youtuber, Gym Leader Ed and was inspired by games like Monster Sanctuary and Cassette Beasts in that regards. With the other main dev qe have been playing Pal World, so that was an inspiration also.

In terms of visual design and gameplay mechanics, we looked at Foster's Home for Imaginary Friend, Pizza Tower, Hollow Knight and Wario Ware for visual style, Plants vs Zombies for the line attack sections (you are the zombies) and of course Mario Games for the 2D platforming.

I actually studied Plant vs Zombie gameplay to design further interactions for the line battles section, but we fell short on time to implement most ideas, we had a healer monster, a ranged monster and a shield monster that didn't get into the game for the Jam. We also had some ideas for platforming that are saved as "Future Work".

Would love to hear more jamers talk about their inspirations!
