very cool game!  i love your ant sprites!  so cute!   i REALLY wish i could change the fire key though... right mouse click???  odd choice.  it hurt my hand, but was fun anyway. :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and your comments! I plan to add an editable control menu now that the jam is over. I ended up meshing two control schemes together into one  when I really should have left it a choice, but glad you had fun anyway!

Submitted

control options are always nice!  a quick fix would be just switching the left and right mouse button actions, so that left click fired and right moved. :)

I tried to ram my blob of ants into the other team just for fun a couple times, but one time it crashed. Pretty fun game though.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I'll have to check out the crashing, it never crashed on me (well after my last build anyway!), but now I know what to look for, thanks!

I'll start with what I think can be improved (and may or may not be nitpicking):
- I felt very, very uncomfortable shooting with right click. I think it's overal way more intuitive to move with wasd (I tried using the mouse but... it's way better to use wasd) and shoot with left click (like in any shooter) simply because it's more convenient and comfortable to handle repetitive clicking with what you're used to mash the most (the left click) while the right click is often for secondary actions (usually you would just hold it or click once in a while, not repetitively).
- I found the game pretty easy, since the bot would just aim where you are and there isn't very much variation. Not an awful thing though, since I think the AI was very responsive and worked well generally. It just was a bit easy to predict.
- The screenshake might be too much. Don't get me wrong, I love screenshake! But I found it was a bit too easy to trigger. What makes a screenshake special is how it makes certain actions feel more satisfying and impactful than others. In this case, it shaked a bit on contact and i don't know if it activates while an enemy dies but it escalated fast and quick. I think toning it down would have been good to, for example, make it feel more satisfying when a bigger screenshake happens. (so, the screenshake balance overall)
- This one is 100% personal, but I feel like tiny crosshair and bullets makes it a bit too tiny to be visually as interesting as it would while bigger; although I'm guessing with so many bullets on screen it might have acted as nuisance; but i still find most of it really small. (as an example, the binding of isaac, enter the gungeon and nuclear throne - granted they're roguelights though, but still top down shooters - all have preposterous bullet sizes, but it works just so well and adds to the satisfaction)

That said, the game felt satisfying and the music and sound effects were very appropriate! The AI is well done and I love how the battlefield gets field... I mean, filled with corpses!
Good job!

Thank you for your honest feedback. I really appreciate you taking the time to write out your thoughts. I'll address yours and in no way take any offense to anything you said, just giving my honest thought process in making those choices:

  • I had originally wanted to only allow the player to use the mouse to move and shoot, but found it was much more enjoyable with WASD and never removed the original control scheme... so I can certainly agree left click might feel more natural. Perhaps I'll add a control choice in a menu moving forward.
  • Totally agree on AI ease, simple was better for me as far as jam went, but definitely noted for future updates.
  • I know I went overboard on screenshake, knew I was taking a risk with its outright madness, but I enjoyed it overall. I'll definitely allow for some options there or toned-down-ness moving forward.
  • I can see what you mean on larger projectiles as well, I went for less of a caring about personal wellness and for the overall ant hill style here. But I could definitely see many style points that way

Again thank you so much for your feedback as it is truly useful advice to take forward if I want to continue dev on this project (which I think I truly do). Thanks!

screen shake needs to be toned down a bit.

Other than that nice game

Developer(+1)

I knew some people wouldn't enjoy the screen shake as much, but I went overboard on purpose for this one for a little humor :). I do plan on updating this one a bit, so I'll see if I can add a slider for personal preference.

Thanks for playing and your feedback!

Nice to see some screenshake! And to have the assets bundled with the game! Especially the audio tracks! Great work!

Developer(+1)

I may have gone a bit overboard on the screenshake, but it just had to be in there!! Thanks so much for playing!

Pretty fun game! Wish there were more levels where you faced more of the other color ants each wave. Overall though like the concept!

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yeah I agree, I had so many ideas I wanted to do but 48 hours is a lot shorter than it seems!

I do plan to keep making some updates to this one so more levels will hopefully be part of it! Thanks again for playing and your feedback!!

I'd love to play this game in a LAN party. This game is a lot of fun with a very fair AI. Would be nice if you could call in over units. Maybe controller support for it's twin sticky nature would be good as well. Fantastic romp.

Developer

Thanks for your feedback and playing! I'm so happy you enjoyed it!

Calling in more units was actually part of my original plan, but alas I had to make some cuts for the short jam. Controller support is a great idea, I could see that working nicely!

Can't say anything negative here. Looks good, sound effects match gameplay well. AI isn't overtly cheeky. Was a really good time. Red4Life

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for playing!! Funny thing is I almost was going to force the player to be blue, glad I changed my mind as people seem to like Red Ants more!! :)

Dude that screenshake is awesome!!! it gets a bit glitchy when I try to run away (which I did a lot) lol and I would get to the bottom edge of the screen.  For real tho, very catchy game!  Now I want a PB&J.  The ones in the freezer where they don't have crust... oh yeah!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for playing and giving your feedback! I certainly had fun with the screenshake this time around!!

Go get yourself some of those freezer PB&Js, you've earned it!

Very satisfying level of organized chaos.

Developer(+1)

Wow, thanks for playing! It's like having a celebrity play my game :) !!

That should be the tagline:.... Satisfyingly Organized Chaos
