Game Title
Coral Song

Developer Name
Team Coral

Short Promo Blurb
A casual coral reef growing simulator set on a site of previous ecological harm.

Full Description
Coral Song is a coral reef growing simulator that takes its inspiration from contemporary debates around the afterlife of decommissioned offshore oil rigs. You play as a young marine biologist tasked with supporting the development of a thriving marine ecosystem on the site of a decommissioned offshore rig in a world after fossil fuels. The game explores the complexities of ecological restoration, highlighting the role decommissioned rigs can play in fostering biodiversity. Through the mask of a casual simulator, Coral Song hopes to underline the complexities that exist from the varying actors in determining the future of decommissioned offshore oil rigs.

Artistic Statement / Use of Theme(s)
On the deliberation of this year’s theme, we took a page from Anna Tsing’s seminal Mushroom at the End of the World, which asks the questions - What manages to live in the ruins we have made? What are the prerequisites for continuing life on earth? What from the present are stepping stones to the future? Guided by the terms reparation, remediation, and repair, we researched and pondered about current discourses surrounding the industry of oil and gas. Leading us to the question - What would happen to an oil rig after the end of fossil fuels?

With its initial contribution to ecological harm, and potential waste management conundrum, how does the site of an oil rig facilitate repair of the ecosystem that it exists within? The complexities around the oil rig with its relation to ecological harm, whilst simultaneously contributing to the preservation of ecological diversity was such a fascinating contrast. From the various disagreements that stretch from marine biologists to environmental groups, to its relation with big oil and marginalized communities brought to light a complexity of reality rather than a dichotomy of positions. Through a casual coral reef grow simulator, where opposition stems from environmental groups and corporate interest, engages the theme of “Change the story”, whereby the “story” and narrative of an oil rig through an ecological lens has “changed”.

Release Plan
We do not intend to polish this game any further or release it in any other state beside the one that it is in. This project was an opportunity for us to try out a new engine (Godot), and a different role than one we normally occupy in game jams. Overall, this project was intended as a small exploratory experience of our own possibilities.

Game is polished and interesting, though I will say the intro segment with collecting trash is a tad boring and lacks the gameplay or uniqueness of the later defending the coral segment.

I really like this idea! The story aspects are interesting and I like how it seems to be affected by your progress in the day. The game looks and sounds fantastic but there isn't much gameplay substance beyond that. Still incredible, well done!

Really well polished and tightly developed! Everything is well put together, and it's very informative in terms of coral growth. My only complaint is that it is hard to keep track of parrotfish when I'm on the top or bottom "shelf" of the coral garden.

The visuals are beautiful and gameplay simple yet enjoyable! After I clean up all of the trash, I do feel like there isn't much to do however...

I've seen this game page in the ideation step and am glad to see its complete version! It's simple but nice gameplay with a clear narrative and cute art. The only thing I don't like is lacking cutscene for good ending(please provide some rewards for players who pass).
