Hi there! I've got some people interested in the jam and we may join, but it's my first time creating fan content like this for an already licensed product.
I've heard the horror stories of Nintendo taking down fan games and I'm in no position to fight legal claims, so how do we mitigate these? As long as we credit the original film, acknowledge that it's fan work and we don't charge any money for it - is that all we need to do? Anything else we can do?

Thanks a bunch, Im keen :)

Great question!

Due to the nature of copyright and trademark laws the direct use of any protected intellectual property, whether for sale or not, will be infringing on copyright laws. Therefore the games created for this game jam must be inspired by a movie, but should not infringe upon any copyright or trademark, so please avoid using identical names, dialogue, appearances, or music.

I hope this helps :D

Hi! Thank you for hosting this game jam, the theme is simply great! :)
In my case, I made a little experiment about an old film using some fragments of the movie itself, but "L'Atalante" is in the public domain already  so it shouldn't be a problem, right?  Sadly Vigo died the same  year the film was distributed, that is 1934... Thank you in advance for the advice and the attention, hope you have a wonderful day :D

So pro tip for the masses: don't do a game based on Top Gun: Maverick. Not only does the original Top Gun have a buttload of video and board games already licensed from it, but you'll probably attract unwanted attention from the Paramount Group if you make a game about the latest iteration in the franchise.
