Nice small bug-free game, pun intended ;). I will echo other comments.

  • I couldn't really see the theme in play without anything growing or recovering
  • Your design choices have limited this game's potential. By having the goal immobile (makes sense for a plant) the optimal strategy will always be to stay close by jumping up and down (like Cedar Cat Studios mentioned) which gets boring fast. Compare this with Cedar Cat Studios's game -  their plants moved and you had to collect things as well, which forces you to move around and switch between offense and defense - greatly increasing dynamism.  Alternatively, I could see this game concept as top-down 2D and you were a rolling spike ball that had to "charge" enemies at speed to kill them - anything to force you to move around
  • The Art is nice, but consider even simple things could have made it pop even more, such as having the face change between spikes and and spikes out

Thx, I might imply these changes in future updates, it would indeed greatly improve the overall gameplay. :) Or maybe I'll save these for a potential spiky guardian 2, I quite like the protagonist

Nice Game. As others have said the graphics are really great. The game is fun and easy to play. To implement the theme of recovery a bit better I would have found it better to start with a certain number of plants and after a certain time where the plants were successfully defended new grow or at least the 3 there are, regrow when one was destroyed. Just as an idea, if you want to work on the game after the jam ;-) But otherwise well done.

That's a great idea actually, thank you! :)

  • Use of Theme - 2
    • Apart from the little bit of story in the page of the game i couldn't tell how the theme is incorporated in the game.
  • Gameplay - 2
    • There isn't much to comment about the gameplay. What is implemented is well done but it's really simple for a month long game jam imo. Also i don't think the main mechanic lends itself well to a game like this with infinite scoring. But i think it would work well with a side scrolling level design maybe.
  • Creativity - 3
    • The main mechanic is quite creative but other than that i think it lacks a bit.
  • Art - 5
    • Perhaps what saves this game. The cute art makes this game a pleaseant experience and may keep the players engaged more than the gameplay itself.
  • Sound - 2
    • I don't think the BGM suited the game. It was like an epic sounding track when the game is really cute.

Thx for the review! It is a bit short but I did not have too much time to work on it, December was  particularly busy for me 😅

This was a really cute and fun game! My submission also focuses around protecting plants from bugs haha so looks like we had a similar idea for recovery. I did find that I could cheese the game a bit by spamming the space bar above the first plant and stayed there forever killing the bugs. Other than that, this was a lot of fun!

Thx,  I wanted to keep it short and cute :) Yeah I really wanted to implement plants, I think they are a wonderful symbol for recovery. As others have stated, I really should have made my plants mobile, but that's how you learn :D
