How does your game meet GBJam's theme?
It's a horror game made in the original game boy art style and palette, emulating the retro style from the console

That was cool! The lighting is great, the art is proficient, the mechanics are competent, and the sound design is cool.

The instant death and restart is a little punishing.

The audio is a little quiet.

All-in-all, good work!

The lightning was the first mechanic we thought about and the one we all agreed on "that's in the game, period". On the  audio, we feared blowing people's ears out, so I tuned them down.

Thank you for your compliments!

It's a nice concept. In particular, I really like the visuals which, while not strictly gameboy-ish, were effective in evoking the feeling of being lost in a vast forest.

I do feel like the horror potential gets hindered by showing the monster too much, though. At some point, it becomes more annoying than scary to wait for the grim reaper to leave so I can collect a gas can. An it stops being tense and starts to veer into goofy when a whole in the ground can have 17 grim reapers inside of it.

Solid work overall though, keep it up!

Cheers! It was a mix of Atari and GB, huh?

And yes, the cave is a little comical when you put it like that... damn, those slashers working overtime!! Hehehe

Thank you very much!

The best of all the games i've played so far in this jam (And i've played a lot), congrats!

Congrats for your entry!

It is visually very impressive, it almost feels like their is too much pixels for a GameBoy!

I think you placed the hiding spots pretty well, however there were some times I got stuck because the reaper wouldn't want to leave. I think it will be a little better if the reaper left the player alone a little more.

Overall, I really enjoy your game, good job!

Thank you so much for the feedback!

We counted the pixels, it is all in the maximum limits hehehe... On the Reaper's behavior, we will have to fine tune that...

Maybe it's the scale of the sprites, but Soundless Woods feels so expansive for a GB game. I wasn't expecting to have so much space to traverse outside, plus interior areas to navigate! The one thing I might tweak is the grim reaper's behavior; the pacing feels a bit slow having to stand around waiting for it to move in the manner necessary to progress.

I would love to see how this game might evolve outside of a jam setting!

Developer

Cheers! A little late to reply, but we thank you very much for the feedback!

We aimed for the "big, empty space" feel to make the most of the small screen size. Also, on the Reaper's behavior, it was a point of discussion, and we were not totally happy with how it turned out, but it worked properly and so we sticked with it :)
