i was a bit surprised how well this old school style of pixel racing went with phonk music, great proof of concept! i really liked the sprites of the cars and the lore of Johnny Red. Proud to say i beat that sum' bitch. one improvement would be to have different friction in the grass section to punish the player for going off track. like others have said you can just cheat and get the checkpoints whenever and poor johnny doesnt have a chance, but i also echo the sentiment that who cares because i had fun playing this game. great work!!

Yeah, you can cheat, but I raced anyway to the nice music and had fun :D Good game, congratulations!

i think something like walls or water in the middle of the grass to prevent players from cheating so easily would've been nice, i destroyed johnny red first try without cheating so it's a bit easy, especially with off-roading as free as it is. i think that the concept of a racing game against the best racer ever with an absolutely cracked ai would've been awesome, but i guess johnny red was simply overhyped lol. i do think that a timer would've added a lot of replayability to the game, as it is a racing game after all. something to consider for future endeavors.

I ended up playing the game twice. First time I lost because I tried to cheat my way to the finish line. Second time I actually got all checkpoints.

Things I liked

  • the AI felt challenging enough, but not unfair
  • good choice for background music

Things that didn't sit well with me

  • I should be punished more for going off-road (greater speed decrease)
  • I would have liked the music level be a bit lower or have a way to decrease the volume
