(I am now in a rush to test as many games as possible to help, so please do not mind the cursory reviewing style.)
I like the in-game ‘graffiti’ instructions at the beginning! It’s functional (and not that far from having a gratuitous static instructions page thrown at the player’s face as
Isome do).controls are QWERTY-only instead of layout-independent
Nice rotating movement! I like it, wheely. Nice effect when jumping.
Sounds would have added life.
nice horizontal cycle when exiting the screen
takes good hands coordination and response time; piano players might be at an advantage!
the concept is really fun, I enjoy it! :) It reminds me loosely of Super Mario World, when you can guide a 5(?)-lengthed platform made out of five blocs (although it’s a bit different).
oh the other hand, loosely theme-related (mainly the die rotation)
nice practical details (the enemies wait for the player to start), as well as visual ones (transitions)
Stopped at level 4.
the game page states there is an Easter egg, but I see nothing special inside the ‘images’ folder, so I am calling your bluff on that one ;)
You say this is your first game, and I find it very enjoyable, so you must have a good sense for gameplay. I will definitely give you points for this. :) If I had to criticise, I would just add you could have used the theme way more and been more original/surprising. Still, good game.
I managed to get the game working without changing my username or adding a new user account. If you have admin privileges on Windows, you can just make the folder C:\Users\Kevin\Desktop\gmtk and install the game there. I'm guessing somewhere in the code (either the user code or in the packaged PyGame code) it's using an absolute path when it should be using a relative path. I see you're in the comments blaming PyGame for the issue, but I'd be hesitant to throw blame at a framework used by hundreds of games, including every Ren'Py game. I experimented a bit with trying to unpack the distribution archive, but I'm not terribly familiar with Python intermediary binaries, so I'm not making much progress. It probably is a fixable issue either way, though.
As for the game itself, it's an interesting idea. I like the idea that there's a counterbalance with placing more blocks making the game more difficult. I don't think the game is terribly balanced for it, though, and I the level design(s) could have been more interesting. It's an interesting game either way, though.
Thank you very much for the tip; it does work!!
ToxicToast: you should definitely put these specific (and simple!) instructions on the game page (and possibly in a comment here, or just direct people towards LRFLEW’s comment).
very specific requirements for installation:) Well done for taking part in jam, it's a shame that it happened with the compilation.
yup python is stupid never gonna use it ever again
TIP: please see this comment by LRFLEW which explains very simple steps to have the game working.
Guys here are the two steps you NEED to do in order to run the game:
create a new user named kevin
get another game on that account
now you can play the game(it's kinda stupid
ALSO RENAME THE FOLDER TO GMTK
this will take less than 5 minute to set up, so pleeese try it out
Hi there. I'd like to try your game but I'm unsure what you mean by create a new user named "kevin". Like a new windows user? I did a bunch of mucking about with pyGame like a decade ago- so it would be cool to see what you've come up with. Sorry to see your submission fraught with complication. As of right now I get an error :(
yup python is stupid it's that the file path is set and it happens that my username is kevin so it's kinda stupid

Classic unexpected bug hah
Guys I know this sounds really stupid but you need to change your user name to Kevin and put the folder on the desktop in order for it to work, It's kinda sad but try it if you want to
python is really stupid I'm never gonna use pygame again
PyGame is more of an instructional framework. Great for teaching, not for actually making games
you can do it in control pannel if you really wanna do it though
I have been looking for some guidance on how to change the account’s name, but it turns out that I do not have the ‘Change the account name’ option, contrary to what the screen capture I see shows… <:( (I guess there was a change in the interface.)
So I have to use the online procedure. Which seems to work! BUT then I am able to change the first name and last name; in order for your game to work, should we merely change the first name, or do we have to take care of both in some way?
(It has now been some time I must switch to Linux anyway to flee evil Microsoft, but hey, for Windows-only games such as yours, I may keep one.)
Hey! I am getting an error "Failed to execute script gmtk2022". I don't know if it can be fixed now, but try to look into it.
hmm I think you need to keep the exe in the folder
TIP: please see this comment by LRFLEW which explains very simple steps to have the game working.
I wanted to play your game, but I got an error saying "Failed to execute script gmtk2022". Hopefully it's just me.
oh man kinda scared that this would happen but you need to keep the exe in the folder
