This was a fun little entry. I've struggled with making good detective-style games, so I can appreciate the challenge of making something that really pushes the deductive skills.
Elementary is a neat concept and a fitting alternative to turn-based combat for the setting, even if it's odd enough that the characters remark on it.
I loved the modded busts and character sprites. The maps look great too, very nice use of the RTP.
The very not-RTP music is fitting for the setting.
Overall, I enjoyed this clever twist on "Clue in RPG Maker."
Thank you KV! I'm glad you liked. :3
Yeah, detective games are very hard. I had some difficulty coming up with... everything actually, and so I decided to go and borrow from Clue.
Overall: One of the most enjoyable entries so far despite its length, with hilarious writing and Elementary combat keeping the game engaging throughout.
Gameplay: Elementary combat was a nice change of pace and done pretty well. Never played Elementary or any of the other games mentioned but I've played Wordle and that was enough for me to get the hang of it.
Music: First jam game I've seen to have a posthumous score by Beethoven himself.
Comedy: The most consistently funny writing I've seen in this jam so far.
Graphics: Not much to say about RTP. Some transitions between player portraits and in and out of Elementary felt a bit abrupt though.
Story: Classic murder mystery always keeping you on your toes. Also wait, Harold is from Emvi? And he killed a demon by talking to it? If Reid had just used words instead of actions Stuck in the Past would have never happened.
Thanks for playing, DJ! I got Beethoven's number if you need it :P
And yeah the transitions could be better. Definitely wil look into that.
I'm glad you enjoyed the writing and the "combat".
PS: The killing demon by talking is a reference to The Amzing Shockingly Origin of the Hero Harold
I don't think I got to play Amazing Shockingly Origin so that kinda went over my head.
Really enjoyed this! Found 18/20 clues and baffled as to what I missed. I also didn't realize I needed to be really paying attention to what the murder weapon was, so I totally whiffed on the guessing part. I found the whole premise quite charming and executed well, even if rushed. Playing elementary in the middle of a murder investigation seemed totally ridiculous, but in retrospect it kind of fits perfectly. Thanks for getting in an entry!
Thank you for playing, Human! I'm happy you enjoyed it!
You didn't miss anything, the final two are the correct answer. I'll probably change it to say 18 out of 18 to avoid confusion.
I found 18 of 20 clues, and the two clues that I didn't find is the answer to the murder. Was wondering if I were somehow supposed to have all clues, though. So I tested the answer with the right character but wrong weapons twice, and then went for some more tests; I've seen both the "bad" ending and the good ending. Won all the Elementary games, and interesting way for a game, though I'm not sure what's with Reid being excited about it in front of Lucius XD I have to say I laughed when Harold is first revealed to be dead, with the clues and dialogues being light-hearted and silly. :P
Yes, 18 is the final number, with the last two being the correct answers. Maybe I should change it to 18 out of 18.
Reid is young, so everything excites him. :D
Thank you for playing!
Very interesting game. Create a nice atmosphere. A future expansion and expansion could result in a nice complete detective game.
Thank you! I'm not sure there will be a full expansion, but there were some things I wanted to add that I didn't get to. So who knows :D
Even though you said it's rushed, I think it is a good entry. It took several tries to figure out what the colored dots mean since the mastermind-like games I played don't even tell you which pieces are correctly placed, only how many of them were placed right and wrong. I only found 17 out of 20 clues and I guessed wrong who the murderer was. Their aloof expression didn't make any sense to me so they were immediately sus. I give this a four stars overall
Thank you for the kind words! You almost got all of them, there's technically only 18 clues (with the last two being the murderer and the murder weapon).
I'm curious to know who you picked out, if you still remember. :)
