Unfortunately played this right as I started to burn out and got a game over. Went up to the Hydra fight and here's what I have to say. Apologies if I'm voting a bit prematurely.
Overall: Lots of potential to really make something amazing out of this core idea, but also lots of room to grow. Would love to see you adapt and improve this for a full-length game.
Gameplay: This is what I was excited for. I've probably made it a little too obvious my passion project is based around a FFXII-style class changing mechanic complete with magical girl transformations, so I'm always excited to see how others approach it. I think this is a very strong foundation and I adore being able to switch classes on a dime to fit the situation. I ended up running a Mage/Gunner/Warrior build and mostly focused on pure damage output. If I needed an emergency full party heal I'd switch to Priestess and use Prayer.
With that said, I think where this game falters is in clarity. Most attacks have joke descriptions and Dresses have none at all. With pretty much no tutorial outside of a single message if you say you haven't played FFX-II, this did leave me a little confused at times. When switching to Dancer, understanding that I'll pretty much only have healing/buffing moves as well as what stat buffs and nerfs come with it would go miles. Some of the battles were also super long too.
Music: Digging the battle theme. RTP remixes are cool but a little on the loud side compared to SFX.
Comedy: The cut-off half-second of Theme6 right before Marsha busts her ass got me, as did some of the attack descriptions.
Graphics: Beefed up RTP works well enough and I love how you differentiated each class's dress. Also a fan of the portrait expressions. Just please consider a different battle transition next time. Took me like half a minute just to transition into each fight.
Story: Has potential so far but dialogue could use some cleaning up.
Wow, I loved the battles in this game. I was gonna say that I'd love a bigger game with this Dress mechanic but I see you said the system was inspired by X-2... I've never played X-2 but this definitely made me interested in its battles, at least.
I will say that I found practically no use in thief, but the other 5 classes were fun to shuffle around. I mainly used Idol, Mage, & Gunner, but had some nice uses with Warrior & Priest. I didn't actually mind the health of any of the battles or bosses. On another note, I cant tell if it was my laptop was taking too long loading the battles, or if they actually take about 10 seconds to load in.
Also yeah everyone's said their piece about the final battle, and I basically agree. I do appreciate that the dialogue was different after each loss which made it feel like it was progressing, but yeah, either lowering the count or making the boss instantly 1-shot you each time to make it quicker would've helped.
Anyway, this was a fun, short game! I'll probably play it again just to experiment more with the classes. That part really was fun.
A lot going for this game. Dress spheres made for some fun mechanics and those transformations were great! I admit I settled into a combination that worked, but with so many choices, there seems to be replay value. The eventing was good, writing had some fun moments (a few spelling issues), but overall really well done.
Combat was the biggest drag to me. The boss enemies had too much hp in my opinion, and even when they weren't challenging, it took a very long time to defeat them. The mobs were too easy in the case of the robots, or again, had too much HP like the golems.
Finally my biggest issue with this game is the really frustrating need to die 5 times to win. It was honestly just really unfun. I was expecting a potentially challenging boss, but then she was a total push over. I'm certain some people would have quit, thinking it was just an unwinnable and broken battle. Aside from that, it was a really solid entry!
The skill descriptions are hilarious and I love it. The music is pretty good too.
I like the idea of changing classes, although a couple of the classes (thief/priestess) don't seem very good. The few times I tried to steal with thief, the enemy had nothing to steal. As for priestess, she has a couple of redundant skills; I see no reason to use Cure/Cura when Prayer/Vigor does the same thing without the MP cost. Also, personally I felt idol was superior; it has got a HP buff which also heals, aoe versions of the same P.DEF / M.DEF buffs that priestess has, as well as a couple of other useful buffs, and can even recover the party's MP. I suppose priestess does have reflect/ensuna/revive/dispel, but the couple of times I tried reflect/dispel at the hydra it didn't work, and I never saw any use for ensuna/revive. I eventually found myself using 1 idol and 2 mages for most of the game.
The part where you gotta lose several times was really annoying. First time, it took me a while to figure it was a scripted loss, so kinda my fault that it dragged on because I was trying to survive with thief's lifesteal and warrior's debuffs. Subsequent times, however, even trying to die felt slow, as the boss would sometimes heal instead of attacking. I get that it's for story reasons, but like, 5 or so times is a bit too much. 2 or 3 would've been enough, imo.
Despite all its flaws, I enjoyed it for the most part, and was quite impressed. Overall, pretty great game.
I'm impressed with this entry.
The visuals are really crisp and smooth, and the animations don't overstay their welcome while still providing lots of eye candy and glamor.
I love the transformation mechanic, with its ability to adjust the party according to the enemies you are fighting and changing circumstances.
The wild-and-crazy music fit the wild-and-crazy anime-styled story. The skill descriptions are fun, too.
But there are also some things that didn't work well for me.
Some of the classes don't seem to be useful. I found myself gravitating toward a Mage-Warrior-Priestess or Gunner-Gunner-Priestess for the majority of the game.
Elemental weaknesses aren't really used in the game (besides the one that I found), meaning 2 of the classes have a bunch of skills that feel like filler. If there were more weaknesses, it wasn't clear to me.
Battles are a bit of a slog. The mobs are OK, I can take them down in 1-2 turns, but the boss battles go on for what feels like too many turns. Second-to-last bosses can heal away damage (ugh), and the final battle required losing too many times before being able to proceed.
So overall, I'm mixed on this game. It has some great ideas a wonderful audio/visual presentation, but the execution needs some work. That said, you seem to have come a long way from when I first met you. I hope you continue to refine your technique because I see what you're trying to do, and I like it.
The humor here sits really well with me :D Super HENSHIN!! XD I also like the kind of music used in this game; it's the kind of thing I like... though I gotta say when I first started playing, I was in some mode because of this HENSHIN! animation excitement or something, that I wasn't paying much attention in battle and ended up getting myself killed XD; And then I had to redo the intro cut scenes again. I also found myself wanting to avoid some battles so in the beginning it was quite repetitive for me. Going through the last boss felt like bad game design; once I knew I was going to lose, it didn't feel good to have to constantly repeatedly lose until the change finally occurs where you can then defeat the boss. I loved the ending after that and the feelings between Marsha and Harold.
Giving this 4 stars just because I'm super close to that target audience of those who enjoy X-2 nostalgia. That is all :)
I really enjoyed this entry! Thanks so much for the FFX-2 nostalgia! <3 The dress sphere system was so fun and very well-implemented! :D I love how each dress skills are very useful in many different situations! The story seems to reference a previous game, so I may have to check that out. Overall, this was a very fun experience! <3 The different sprites for different dresses were really cute, and I love the transformation sequence in battles! The music was fun as well, esp. the battle music! Again, so much FFX-2 reference here and I love every single one of em! Story was fun & characters were funny. Great job for a great entry! :D
