Thematic Relevance
The game is about Ishikawa Goemon, August 24, 1558 – October 8, 1594) was a legendary Japanese outlaw hero who stole gold and other valuables to give to the poor. He and his son were boiled alive in public after their failed assassination attempt on the Sengoku period warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. His legend lives on in contemporary Japanese popular culture, often giving him greatly exaggerated ninja skills.

Unfortunately, I couldn't use the Shuriken at all, no matter what button I pressed. Still, I enjoyed the art style a fair bit, was so clean! I hope you still enjoyed making it! Thanks for sharing it with us.

I know the buttons may not work sometimes. It could depend on the browser you are using. Thanks anyway!

Just for your reference, my browser is Vivaldi. :)

The gameplay in this was very fun, and I also really liked the art. I also encountered the bug where my shurikens would not throw, but once I refreshed enough times it worked. Great job!

Developer

Happy you enjoyed it! Refreshing the game seems to do the trick for shuriken malfunctions, but this is not ideal of course. Still keep in mind this is only a protoype so far. The performance of web-games depend on the browser and this is hard to test.

I really enjoyed the setting and the games quick pace. One thing i couldn't figure out was how to make the shurikens fire reliably. It wouldn't work some rounds, i'd die and then they'd work. Not sure if its something im doing there. Overall, good game, congrats.

Developer(+1)

You are probably not doing something wrong. The game has some bug related to firing the shuriken, which I could not identify since it only happens occasionally. Thanks for testing and reporting!

Tried a few times, and then took Humane Tiger’s advice below and got a bit further, but I wasn’t coordinated enough to kill more than a couple enemies with the shuriken. However, I still tried many times because it was fun and snappy, and the restarts were quick, and I really liked the high energy music and sfx. Ishikawa Goemon seems like a really rich choice of subject, and I appreciated all the historical background.

Developer

Since the game is not very big and the rooms are randomly placed you just need a little luck to finish the game. I used the game engine Phaser to minimize the loading times and the music is heavily compressed which you might hear occasionally. Thanks for playing!

Nice game! The Binding of Isaac controls are a bit hard to get the hand of, but then again I kinda stuck at these games xD

SFX are nice and music too.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for trying out our game! The controls are not perfect. I will try to improve them.

Great job!  I agree with a previous commentor who said the z key to throw the shuriken was difficult.  If not in motion already.  I'm a sucker for a dungeon crawler and I like simple as well!  Thank you for the extra information on our Ishikawa Goemon!  I enjoyed reading about his life ... not so much about his death :(

Developer

Thank you! One of the most fun part of joining this jam was doing research and this is how I found out about Ishikawa Goemon. Then I was happy to find a great researcher, Cecilia Verino, who did all the heavy writing and research.

Super fun & lightweight game :) love it

Just...graphics are a bit weird XD (it's only personal)

Developer (1 edit)

Happy you like it! I had to make the characters and animations myself so this might explain the funny looking graphics.

Got him :-) (and collected 4 treasures on my way)

I enjoyed playing your game. The most outstanding feature of your game imho:  Procedurally generated rooms! This is really cool, taking  also into account, that there is even decoration inside some rooms. The controls feel snappy, also good job on this one. Also like the music - it fits pretty well.

The art is coming from an asset pack - but it is well chosen, fitting the the theme of your game.

Some points for improvements:

  • Alternative WASD controls are easy to do and instantly please players like me
  • Not all contries have a QUERTY keyboard ;-) (here in Germany for example we have QWERTZ keyboard, so the Z key is misplaced)
  • throwing the shurikan was really hard, as you have to run towards the enemy at the same time
  • Sometimes the enemy was  standing just iniside the entry of a new room, no chance to dodge this (best tactic for me was to quickly run in-and-out of a  room to  get a glimpse of what is inside)

All in all a well-made game and an interesting  plot choice.

Thanks, I agree with all of your comments. Throwing the shuriken is hard and I will try to fix this. The enemies tend to get stuck in a room which makes the game even harder, but unfortunately there is no easy way to fix this. I did not know about the German keyboard issue, but I suppose I could add another key for throwing such as the M key. Adding WASD is easy.
