This artstyle is gorgeous! Works really well in 2D. Game is a little easy but still fun.
Great art!!
Managed to get to year 3 and get 1500 points!
What I liked: that killing the villagers is not mandatory
The art direction is fantastic. Out of all the entries I have played so far this one stands out visually!
Love the aesthetic, looks really unique.
The gameplay was pretty smooth too, I like the twist on the runner genre
An awesome game. I liked the classical Chinese aesthetic in the game. I enjoyed going around and eating people or playing the peaceful way. It would be cool if there were more in-game or in-universe effects of eating too many people or playing the pacifist way. For example, pictures on the wall depicting Nian as either a violent monster or a chill monster. But that would be best for a future update if you plan on expanding on the game after jam!
Thank you! Actually, I was thinking the same but we didn't have time to implement it! I was thinking of a statue of Nian that would heal your fear quickly when you're near it - but if you anger the villagers, the statues would be increasingly defaced/destroyed and would no longer heal you. Definitely something I want to add for a post-jam version!
A very interesting premise! I appreciate the simplicity of the concept and the execution. The classical Chinese aesthetic was also a very distinct and additive element to the overall game. I'd say it might be a bit too easy to accidentally eat people (my tendency to always run resulted in a lot of passerby being eaten despite me not intending to do that), though that is part of what the creature would do, so it does make sense. Overall, very nice aesthetic and enjoyable base concept!
