It's still buggy, some Objects are simply placeholder yet and not really working, but until the end of this jam we will work on this little game and even after. Feel free to comment and give feedback.

At the moment you need only the Arrow buttons for moving/jumping and the Space button to activate the door multiple clicking to play.

I want to see where this is going! Nice character concept. I've just noticed, is the Molk based on a star-nosed mole?

To point a few things out:

1. About jumping responsivity - the issue is, that just checking for "jump key pressed" and "character being on the ground" is not enough for the good controls feel. There are some other things to do, like:

  • If the character is still midair, and the player presses the jump key, register pressing it for a brief moment. If during this brief moment, the character is on the ground, do the jump.
  • If the character was on the ground, but falls from it, register him being on the ground for a brief moment. If during this brief moment, the player presses the jump key, do the jump

2. At the moment, the game starts with the level, rather than main menu.

3. After a few jumps on the bouncy mushroom, I fell through it. Is this intended?

4. Some sprites tear. This used to really annoy me, when I was trying to fix it for my game, but, in fact, there may be an easy fix for this - sprite atlas.

> 3. After a few jumps on the bouncy mushroom, I fell through it. Is this intended?

Yes and no. The plan for them is to have some amount of "power" and when that is used up they need some cool-down before one can jump again.

Also, you fall out of that trampoline loop for example when you hit the ceiling.

Submitted

Just to confirm - yes, that was exactly after hitting the ceiling.

Developer(+1)

What's really still missing is some animations for vertical movement. That will give you proper feedback that the player is not jumping anymore and just falling down. If you take a leap from the ledge above and just let yourself fall on the mushroom, you won't get pushed upwards, either. In order to get the jumping boost of it you have to actively jump onto it.

So, it works as designed, but is lacking feedback to the player. Jump animations is already on our list (and the graphics is already prepared).

Developer(+1)

first: thank you for Playing and your Feedback
yes, it is likely a pink star nosed mole

1. we already improved the players "Jump", the next upload will show it

2. thank you, I will take care, that the next Upload will contain the Menu first
4. yes, I noticed the Sprites Glitch and already fixed this for the next Update

until the next Upload

The artwork and atmosphere were very nice!

I won't echo the feedback that was already given regarding art, layers, and controls, but it will be interesting to see how the game feels with these improvements.

I didn't actually know what I was supposed to do since there is no tutorial yet, I was able to move and jump, but no other keys that I pressed seemed to do anything. It might be worthwhile to put a description of the objectives and controls on the store page in the meantime. (My game also lacks a tutorial, but my store page helps fill in the gaps, there's nothing wrong with a work-in-progress :-) )

Overall, great atmosphere, art, and progress.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing the game and your Feedback.

Yes, the Tutorial is in progress, I am currently working on it. There will be a short cutscene before you'll enter the Level you can already enter, so when you start to play you'll know what to do. Also we won't use Language as much as possible, so the game will be more intuitiv. Once we got the other objects to work, it will be also far easier to notice what to do, but we couldn't get the units or the collectable items to be working yet. We are still working on the game and will upload every time, one of the objects got to work how it shall.

Sincerely

I know you still have much to do but since I'm also creating a platformer type of game I have a couple of suggestions:

1. user input/output should be a little more responsive (I get stuck on walls sometimes and my jumps don't always work)

2. the sprites are very pretty to look at but I think some of them are being filtered incorrectly making them blurry

there has been so much progress since your last submission I'm glad to see how far you've come in only one month! this is really a great job missy!

Developer

We think we have found the solution for the wall stickiness this evening so when we are ready for the next upload, this should be fixed.

As for the jumping, please pay attention on when jumping works and when it doesn't. Specifically, at the moment you can only jump from standing on the ground, not when you happen to land on one of the side-hanging lamp, for example...

Very cute game, I'm excited to see it progress! I loved the sprites and the background music created a nice chill vibe. The spider elevator was a nice touch too.

I noticed that some of the level assets looked a little low-res, e.g. the "ladder" looked a little blurry compared to the surrounding assets. Also the lights were a nice touch but they seemed a little bit too bright/intense, I think a softer light would work better.

Developer

Thank you for your feedback and your interest in the game.

yes, atm I am using a 36x36 Pixel resolution for the objects ingame, while the more progressed assets and the molk already became 114x114 Pixel objects. With the game development progress I will exchange all low-res objects for the higher resolution, since they are more comfortable for the eyes.

thank you for special telling about the ladder, I will take care of it.

sincerely

Hello again! I am back after the new update for the windows download.

  • I love your music! Its calming and reminds me a lot of stardew valley (which just has fantastic music)
  • I find all your sprites very charming!
  • I liked how the lights turned on as I passed them.
  • The spider picking you up and carrying you back to the top was pretty fun!
  • I did notice that if I hold left or right into a wall after jumping I get stuck!
  • Character movement feels much improved since the first iteration of the game I played

I can't wait for the rest of the world to be created and perhaps a story to be built around all these interesting pieces you have in the game. Right now there is not a lot to do but I can see you guys have put a lot of work in and are working towards making it even better! Keep up the good work!

(also the spider seemed to be behind the tiles in this area)

Developer

Yeah, layers are a bit of a mess at some places at the moment. Getting stuck on the walls is yet another thing that's on our list to fix.

While I'm a somewhat experienced coder, I'm still in an early learning stage regarding Unity and how to do things in it. And I started learning with a 3D course and now I'm coding in a 2D environment...

It looks like your windows download for 7/25 is a linux build. Keep it up I love the little mole sprite he is such a cool character! I tried out the one for 7/23 and it looks like you guys made good progress since the beginning of the jam!

Also can he climb walls? I was having trouble getting back up to the places that I fell down!

Developer

I reuploaded the Windows Version, it should work now.

Atm my Molk is not supposed to climb the walls, this will come later when he will be able to leave the tree inside, with the new version there is the spider to get you back to the top

Developer

Indeed, despite the fact that I was called away for some family issues on Sunday it had been a very productive weekend.

Eventually you should be able to climb ladders on your own and the "spider lift" will be used at other places that have no ladder...

For maximum gamefun please install "Das Volk der Molks 2021-07-25", it's the most developed Version during the jam.

If you want to compare the game for the status when the Jam started install "Jam-Start-Exe" (Windows only). Feel free to comment, Feedback is highly Appreciated
