You're right, we had a pretty similar idea. I would even say that your concept is better than mine.
I like the fact that you can do so many things on the phone, not just looking through the camera like in my case.

You made your game in unreal engine, right? I'm interested in how you solved the problem of the ghost that can't be seen with the naked eye but can be seen on camera. The way I achieved this was I gave the ghosts a translucent material that is able to collect custom depth and then I used a stencil so that in the post process of the camera I could make the spirits

Developer

Haha thanks.

Actually it was made in Godot 4.  In Godot, it is quite trivial to achieve this effect, there are visibility layers for which cameras can be set to either see or ignore.

Oh that is so amazing, don't know why unreal doesn't gave that

Notes from gameplay:

- This weirdly seems to want to launch only in my secondary monitor

- The text for the main menu is great, very thematic

- Useful interface instructions. Text could be a bit nicer, looks slightly messy (or maybe just too busy). A different font may help with this. Next button being different font contributes to this. The font color scheme being fewer colors may also help.

- I like that mouse sensitivity is an option!

- Sound test is a great detail for adjusting volume

- Need an exit button back to game from esc --> instructions. Looks like it retains my spot in the game though

- Can't seem to interact with my phone. Used Q and E and Left mouse to press the 3 icons at the bottom, but nothing is happening

- Status bar concept is clever, but takes a bit of memorization to remember what each thing means

- Creepy and well-written text messages!

-  How do I call a number? Seems like I'm stuck at the locked door

- Rebooted the whole game. Clicked around and somehow triggered the home button. Oh, seems there's an invisible button at the bottom of the phone.

- Took a picture, but it didn't seem to show up in the photo gallery

- Clicking back to text messages is just showing name and time of message, not the text of the messages anymore. Buttons at the bottom don't seem to work for showing the message. I'm hearing buzzes for next tutorial text but can't find a way to read it

- Heh was wondering what would happen if I called other numbers like 911, 411 or 0, would be an interesting spot for an easter egg

- Rebooting again so I can see the other tutorial messages

- Text messages seem to be triggered by where I walk, walking too quickly can make me get two at once so I can't read full text of both messages (first one cuts off, no way to scroll back)

- Ghost killed me

- Katrina is texting me, but can't see what it says.

- I wanna see a ghoooost

- Darn died before I could pull up camera

- Ahhh I found one. That's creepy, gave me a jump scare! Dead again.

- Wish I could see status bar when camera is open

- Lots to explore, but can't seem to get far without ghosts getting me

- I like how there are multiple routes to leave the safe house. Replaying doesn't feel that tedious since there are new places to run away to

Overall, this was a FANTASTIC concept and I really loved loved loved the idea! It's creepy and unique and I'd love to see future development on this! I played 6 times and got killed by at least four different ghosts. The controls are pretty hard to juggle, so I couldn't really capture pictures of them - adjustment here would go a really long way. The text messages were spooky and weird and well-written; they definitely enhanced the overall vibe of the game. Unfortunately a bug seems to block being able to read new ones after clicking on other parts of the phone. I enjoyed playing this and hope you refine and expand it!

Thanks so much for the detailed feedback! It is extremely useful.

As you have found, a variety of elements are a bit busted in a (failed) attempt on submitting on time.

I will clarify a few things:

-You receive a text message of part of a ghost's name when you take their photograph. It sounds like you managed to find Katrina at the top of the stairs :P. There is another type of thing you can take a photograph of to get her last name, and then there is something special you can do in the graveyard once you have the whole name.

-Speaking of this "other thing",  the phone reception signal level increases the closer you get to these secret things.

-Text scrolling and viewing photos is bugged, didn't have time to fix them unfortunately.  The camera showing your info is an easy fix, will do.

-Yes, it was a bit dumb of me to have the home button that hard to see, hence the message in the instructions. Definitely will fix.

-In general, when exploring areas, you should have the radio toggled on and camera active at all times. Switching to other apps such as the map only briefly as you need them. Without these you are almost guaranteed to stumble directly into a ghost.

Thanks again for playing, and the detailed feedback.

Looking forward to seeing a future version of this! I really hope you keep up development!

Interesting and fun conceptually. In execution, the control are too confusing to be usefully playable. Having to control both hands with so many buttons/clicks/menus makes it hard to photograph the ghosts and evade them at the same time. The audio was also quite loud - the FX were screaming at me and the music was barely audible. Very cool concept, and with a bit of polish, this could be a very excellent game!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback. The controls on the phone are meant to be a bit fiddly to panic the player when faced with a ghost, but definitely not so bad as to be frustrating. I will have a look at expanding the deadzone on the phone and perhaps merging the "aim" and "finger" toggle buttons into one action and making it a hold-to-aim, that way if you are getting attacking you can simply let go of the button to run away quickly. Separate audio sliders is also on the list. Thanks for the kind words.
