Finally beat it :)

Story: pretty basic but rescuing someone always feels satisfying after you had to work at it.

Gameplay: not too bad actually, but I was unable to play with a KB+Mouse. I had to use antimicro to map the controls to a controller (otherwise I could barely play since I'm so bad with KB+Mouse).  My thoughts;  sometimes it seemed like pressing Up (W) helped me jump higher. This wasn't noted in the  pre-game instructions and I was never sure if maybe I was doing something else that was giving me a bit of extra 'oomph' for some jumps that I couldn't make from a standstill without pressing up/w.   Double jump worked pretty well. Sophia told me there was a jetpack but I never found it (despite beating the game and finding Dad) so I wasn't able to test that.  when fighting, sometimes my sprite would face the opposite direction after my first swing. I think this happened mainly after an abrupt stop (maybe?) but I wasn't able to reliably reproduce the issue.  I learned that I needed to give myself more space when engaging in enemies to compensate.  I've run into similar issues myself so it might just need some extra tuning.

I agree with the comment to consider ways to block/break bullets with an attack but this only came into play against the Double Jump boss and his floating buddy with homing gumballs. I seriously had a tough time with this guy and had to basically do laps, clockwise, around the level to lure to little guy up (so the top platform would block the gumballs) then when he got close, I could drop down and smack the Boss a couple times before doing another lap.  I kept wanting to be able to get a few more attacks in but the homing missiles were too much for me to stand still for long. Maybe even just making the homing missiles breakable would be enough.

I also think you need some level-switch transitions and/or allow the player to use doors rather than making them insta-use. if they are instant use, definitely need a transition effect I think. either a screenwipe/fade or something. not a huge deal, but would smooth out the transitions.   Ditto on the music transitions. either let the music keep playing, or fade out one track before fading the next track in.

Minor gripe that some level text was blocked by the hearts.

Minor gripe that I wasn't able to 'feel' getting hit. either with a graphic, or getting pushed a bit, or some other visual feedback (sfx feedback discussed in music section).

I liked the level design in general since it was simple enough that I could "almost" keep it in my head, but in the end I resorted to Old-School paper maps :)  there's probably mixed opinion on that but I did enjoy trying to map out all of the connections, which helped me realize when I was backtracking into earlier sections (music helped here too!).   I did like that the rooms connected so that you could backtrack a bit into earlier rooms, but it did seem like as soon as I got the Double Jump and Wall Jump that it was a little too obvious on where to go next, which made the game feel a bit more linear.  But for a one-month jam that's a tough thing to balance. To me, it's obvious you were on the right track with the earlier parts of the game and I'm assuming you ran out of time to keep that approach more consistent for the later part.

Graphics:  I think the graphics were pretty consistent and fun to look at. Your enemies and your player were the strongest. The level graphics were ok but there was a lot of variety.

Audio: I really loved the main track and I especially loved how the further you went, the track slowed down and changed up.  It helped provide additional audio clues that I was progressing in the right direction. After getting the high-jump boots I managed to get back to an earlier room and the music sped up to the original song which kinda reminded me that maybe I'd been here. After consulting my paper map I found out that I was indeed in the older section and was able to quickly decide to go a different direction.

I really missed SFX though. as I said above, it was often tough to know when I got hit unless I saw the hearts actually disappear at the top of the screen.  For a short game this wasn't too bad, but the lack of SFX was definitely noticed when juxtaposed with the really great soundtrack.  In my experience I've found that a few SFX can make a huge difference so definitely something to add to your gamedev toolbox sooner rather than later.

Enjoyment: I enjoyed playing! the music really really helped and I'm still humming it in my head, and hearing the various variants was really fun too.  I'm glad I was able to beat it and would definitely love to play an updated version if you decide to polish it up and submit to a SMVM in the future.

Thank you so much for the lengthy feedback! Really appreciate the effort put into this :) (Btw congrats on the game jam!)
I totally forgot about the floating code, yes pressing up makes you fall slower, wanted to try to give the player more control over the character at the very beginning of creating this game, hence I implemented a "fall faster if you press down" and a "fall slower if you press up" function for the character. But as I rushed to complete the game I completely forgot I put that in. Youre the first to notice this haha!
Apologies for not creating controller support, never tried implementing that before so I didnt think of trying that out (im still really new to game dev), in the long run I do hope to learn how to do this though!
I'll try to see if theres any facing issue for the character, but during my (very limited) playtests, I didnt see any problem. Still will be wary of this though, thanks for highlighting this to me.
My mistake on making the gumballs not destroyable, just thought that making the second boss harder would have been the right move. Now Ive learnt that just because something is hard doesnt make it enjoyable, so will definitely take note of this for future game jams.
I didnt have enough time to make scene transitions but I do agree that the instantaneous switching of scenes does make it looks a little jarring.  Will do the same for music transitions in the future (if I have time for the jam haha)
Will read up on how to make the game more "open" in the future for"bigger" games definitely, dont want a full fledged game to feel linear, especially for a metroidvania.
I cant speak for the audio, but you can definitely hit Sulkin Raven up on that :) he did a great job haha
Will definitely make SFX a priority in future jams.
Once again thanks again for the lengthy and well thought out comment!

I liked your use of the theme. E.G. it ENCOMPASSED the game. Nobody playing the game can say "I don't think this is about food..." Great work on that!

I loved the music!! It has a Bugsnax vibe to it that really fits the jellybean-candycane vibe of the world. It messed up sometimes, but still it's awesome. I'm glad you had good save points too! That made the game easier in the long run. Especially for the boss.

Some polish issues that could be because of the time constraints:

  • There was a tutorial hidden behind the life gague when you reach the health stations. I was able to figure out with context, but its unreadable.
  •  Fall speed is too fast. It makes every jump kind of scary.
  • Soft locks. Early on, I got stuck in pits i couldn't jump out of and had to reboot the game. This happened a couple times, but it still made it a bit frustrating. Especially with the fall speed being so fast.
  • Some impact noises for the enemies would have made the blood effect punch a little harder, but that feedback was good on its own.
  • I got lost. A bunch. If a minimap or something were implemented, or if doors were color-coded, it would be great, but the threat of soft-lock pits and death made re-navigating a chore.

Otherwise, great job! You made a functioning game with great music in a month. Awesome job, seriously!

Thank you so much for your feedback!
Really regret not catching that tutorial text bug at the health stations, and really sorry about the soft locks. Will take note to playtest my game a bit more in the future, I think i didnt plan my time for doing stuff in this jam really well so I ended up not play testing as much.
Quite a few people have commented on the fall speed and after replaying the game and feeling the character controller again I agree with how fast it is falling, will change the script to have the character be more "floaty" when it stops jumping and have a terminal falling velocity put in place.
Will also make SFX one of the priorities in the next jam I get myself into, havent dabbled in that before so was a bit hesitant doing that here.
Once again thank you for the feedback!

Call me slow, but it finally sunk in half way though the game that I was playing as a kidney bean in the land of diabetes where sugar and treats are the enemy. :P  I like how your concept of the game and your graphic elements came together and the subtle sense of humor that was presented. The art is simple but very very charming  and I thought suits the game very well. The music was very nicely done and catchy. I was quite bummed when it went missing in one of the level. The visual blood effect when enemies are getting their whacking is nice, but I think a sound effect to go with that would improve the audio experience greatly.  Also I couldn't figure out how to get the booster to work after beating the red bear, pressing shift didn't seem to do anything.  On one of the level, the candy cane charging enemies was able to pass though walls and I wasn't sure if they are suppose to be able to do that.

For a second game, it is very good. You have pretty much all the elements in, all working. There's a few things to tweak and bugs to exterminated. But it was a very enjoyable and playable game. good job!

Thank you so much for the feedback and the kind words!
Had to slap together a last minute "sound system" after realizing that my "sound system" couldnt be imported from my old project that easily (Sorry Sulkin Raven :p), will need to check that out definitely.
Those charging probably shouldnt be passing through walls XD Probably an optimization issue on my end that I need to work out.
Will definitely try experimenting with SFX in my next Jam, didnt really prioritise that this time round as I wanted to experiment with creating enemies/ bosses as the goal for this game jam, but playing around with SFX is definitely on my to do list.
Thank you once again for your time!

The music was awesome, and I enjoyed the hand-drawn animations. I think you may have been able to tweak the jumping so that you didn't fall so fast, but I enjoyed playing through the game. I have to admit that I was not able to beat the second boss, but what I did play was fun.

I had all these thoughts too. A terminal velocity on the falling would be nice. The second boss was really hard, but I took it down after 4-5 tries. It was nice to have a save point right before it. The music, enemy design, tiles and backgrounds were all really nice and all worked together with the candy theme. One thing - it seemed like you could destroy gumball bullets with your attack, but it only worked for me when I lined up absolutely perfectly. The hard stuff would've felt more fair if you could easily destroy bullets with your attack.

Thank you so much for the feedback! This is one of the first few games Ive made, so my player controller definitely needs some tweaking. Will definitely make the next platformer game have a change in the falling stuff. As for the gumballs, I accidentally forgot to make the gumballs for the 2nd boss destroyable, so that might have caused an issue. Probably need to make the hitbox for the gumballs a bit more apparent. Thank your once again for the feedback!

Hey, thanks for the compliment on the music!  Much appreciated!
