I'm compiling a list of engines, tools, CC assets, etc. to aid in the development of NaNo entries. Please feel free to add your own if I missed any!

Pre-Made Assets

Whoa, thank you so much for gathering all of these! I'll need to take a look at all of them.

Some of the art programs listed as "Free" don't let you save unless you pay. (Clip studio and SAI, haven't used any other ones.)

Hi, thanks for catching that! That's what I get for too much copypasta I have fixed the information for those and added some more links, including Font resources!

This is pretty nifty! I didn't know there were more free dedicated VN engines. I'll definitely take the time to browse through these resources. Thanks!

Should probably throw in GIMP (https://www.gimp.org/) on the list of graphics editors too. Sure it's not perfect, but it's not bad enough to be left off entirely :p

Cloudnovel.net is an online based no-coding visual novel engine, with the possibility of downloading the game as well. It's free to set up an account and use. There is also a ton of assets on the site from characters to icons and gui.

Is it possible to host completed games on other websites as or put the download available on itch.io ?

Yep! You can host your completed game on any site for desktop games. You can even create a game, download it and sell it without publishing it online to the site.

I would add Manuskript to writing programs, it's a pretty good Scrivener alternative (basically a story outliner with a bunch of extra features).

It doesn't have everything Scrivener has, but I personally prefer Manuskript and I find that it seems to have what's needed anyway instead of too much bloat.

Dang! This'll come in handy!

Hey guys, I'm the developer for SukiGD. Since I don't have many users, my bugfixing only covers stuff that I come across. If you decide to use it, please let me know via email if you run into any bugs. Thanks!

I would also add Inkspape a free vector based Art creator. https://inkscape.org/

Heya! Really excited to participate in my first NaNoRenO. Been wanting to create a visual novel for quite some time. Not sure if this will come in handy, but if you're looking for some assets, you can try out Envato Elements. Only downside is that it's a paid membership but they do include photos, graphics, videos and audio if that helps.

Also, for art programs - Affinity Photo and Designer are wonderful to use for those who are not keen in paying for a monthly membership with Adobe. And for those who are on the iOS devices - can't rave enough about Procreate

I would suggest incompetech.com for more royalty-free background music.
