Great job submitting a game! This is a pretty ambitious project so big props for making something like this playable in such a short time! I liked the playable tutorial and the cute music. Its awesome you were able to make the song feel like a sea shanty with the sound restrictions. The door to start the game in the tutorial should have a label because I wasn't done reading/messing around and I accidently started the game.

I really enjoyed the gameplay loop. The objectives encouraged exploration to upgrade the ship which let me explore the more dangerous territories. Upgrading the ship was really satisfying since it changed the sprite. Seeing the treasures/crew/map on an island and then searching for the dock was fun. For visual clarity I would prefer the ocean to be blank white with some waves. The dithering gave me a little headache. There were some noticeable bugs I encountered like a dock not unloading me onto the correct one, crew I already interacted with before a ship upgrade didn't want to join even after upgrading the ship, and the M bug in the tutorial section. But with something this ambitious in such a short time I would expect a few bugs.

The kraken boss fight was also awesome. Its unfortunate the surprise got spoiled by the M bug haha. I had fun and I always love a good sea/pirate game. Thanks for participating!

Cute game! I included it in my Nokia 3310 Jam 4 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :)

That was a fun adventure -

I died pretty quickly the first time, until I noticed the gif about running into ships to kill them :)

Thank you for playing! It's more of shooting at point blank range, but has the same result in the end, ha ha.

I didn't really enjoy the exploration because there was no way to tell where the next piece of map was. I ended up just moving around empty ocean for a long time.

The combat feels nebulous. I couldn't what was happening and I didn't see any reason to bother.

Developer

Thank you for trying it out. The map pieces are shown on the map along with chests as the square markers.

The combat is tied to exploration as a way to gain access to new areas as your ship is upgraded.

Really cool game! I like the feeling of exploring the open sea with lots of little islands with secrets to find. I like the progression of slowly finding more pieces of the maps which leads you to more islands with more things to find. Upgrading the ship is cool too, and I enjoy the sprite changes every time it gets upgrade

I feel like I might have broken something though. One of the docks to took me to a completely different part of the map, People stopped wanting to get on the ship (even though I only had 6/12 people) and then I fought and beat the kraken despite only exploring about half the map.

Developer

Glad you enjoyed the game, and that you were able to beat it! The game was did not get a full play-through before submission, but luckily the fact I added a few incorrect crew objects and an incomplete dock was offset by the under-powered kraken. We will definitely be fixing these things after the judging ends. The messed up dock was very disorienting when we first experienced it. :)

There is a known bug with the map. If used in the title or failure screens the game will crash. The main game world is unaffected.
