Great job submitting a game! This is really fun and pretty polished experience overall. The movement of the stars and the elevator track gives a lot of life to the game. Its awesome to see how much you packed in the menu with fps selection and palettes.

Since the upgrades are random one time I couldn't afford any of them after the first wave which felt a little bad. One time the torpedo enemy warning was obscured by a big guy and another an enemy spawned pretty high under the ui and I couldn't tell which type it was at first.

I think my favorite enemy is the tennis ball. I like the attack pattern you have to employ to kill him. The game got really fun as it got going because of how you have to prioritize enemies effectively. It gets pretty overwhelming later on but I think its great how getting hit demolishes everything else on screen to give the player a bit of a breather. Thanks for participating!

Fun game! I included it in my Nokia 3310 Jam 4 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :)

Thanks for featuring the game.

Super simple and super cool game :) It translates very well to the style, also in visuals. I especially like how the main character looks like. The basic gameplay is fun enough, but introducing upgrades was a good decision and it immediately felt like a game, not just a prototype. It's awesome that they can synergize, too - like picking both fire rate+ and ammo+.

Developer

I'm glad you liked it.

Can't take too much credit for the main character's design - it's mainly based on the main character from Hero Core.

I actually added the ammo system later in development after I realised fire rate upgrades were OP without something to limit them.

This was pretty good. The difficulty-curve is not over-bearing, and matched with a variety of enemies, makes it quite replayable. The upgrades felt meaningful, although not always the ones that I wanted. It would be nice to carry over one or all of your upgrades when you have to restart.

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Not always getting the upgrades you want is semi-intentional, but I could definitely make tweaks to have important ones show up more or something. Keeping ALL the upgrades would be pretty broken, but getting to keep one or two could be interesting.

This was fun! Although it seems like a fairly standard shoot 'em up at first glance, it keeps introducing new enemies to keep things challenging, and really forces you to think about what you need to upgrade to survive longer. The extra touches, like the changeable palette and frame rate, really sell the game and give it a more polished feel.

I got a score of 37,538 points on my first try. I got overwhelmed on the first level with the splitting enemies; they force you to stay busy with them for a long time, and a missile would always spawn while I was trying to shoot them and hit my elevator.

Developer

Not a bad score! That's the best I've heard outside of my own.

Yeah the splitters ended up as a bit of a difficulty wall - either you have the right upgrades to kill them quickly or you just kinda die. They might need some adjusting.

Cool game with a classic feel.

I found myself $5 under what I needed for an early-game money drop upgrade, which I think would’ve really paid off, although I don’t know how big the increase is. That was a slight bummer. Some other upgrades I’m not sure I ever needed.

I guess you just have to learn when things are coming and make sure you save enough – at least assuming the upgrade order isn’t randomized, I didn’t check. But random would probably feel worse.

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Upgrades offered are indeed random. The idea is to work with the hand you're dealt. The upgrade pool is small enough that you should cycle through everything.

The score/money upgrade is more of a long term investment. Early on it's usually better to focus on DPS improvements.

Love this game.

Would definitely fit in with other real nokia 3310 games

I like the upgrade system and difficulty curve. Might be one of my favorites so far. Nice job!

Developer

Thank-you very much!

18529 is my high score so far. Love how you slowly introduce new enemy types and their behaviours. Makes for a really good and addictive diffuculty curve. If I had an issue, it would be that the enemies who move diagonally move a little too fast even if you upgrade yourself ( or maybe I just need to get better at beating them lol ). Otherwise though, amazing little game

Thanks! Glad you liked it.

The diagonal guys are slower than you even at your base speed. But yeah, it can be a bit too tricky to catch them when they spawn in a bad spot.
