Description
My idea for this OST Composing Jam 4 is to create a sound track for a runner game. My concept is mixing up the old Flashback game with Canabalt and Vector like runner. It's a drum and bass track.

It's happening in the forest when you are trying to escape from a couple of armed enemy. You don't know what happened, but you don't want to die.

I made the whole track with my Polyend Tracker ( https://www.instagram.com/p/CgOPQBqKVJd/ ) and I mixed with Ableton Live.

Message from the artist:
Old Flashback game with Canabalt and Vector like runner OST

Theme:

Runaway
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
It's a drum and bass OST track for an infinite runner. :)

This made my ears very happy. It's mixed really well and the trance-like quality gets me lost in the music. There's really a lot of detail here around the driving beat and each sound is incredibly satisfying and adds to the overall texture. I really enjoyed this one. Thanks for sharing it!

Lots of thanks for your kind words. <3

Nice drums and bass vibes, and love that you only used a hardware tracker, I find that very creative! Definitely gives me Canabalt vibes (but with a forest rather than an urban setting). Nice ambient menu theme. I could see the menu theme transitioning perfectly into the gameplay as you hit Play.

Thank you really much!

Your tracks have a nice feel to them, and it’s cool that you made it almost entirely dawless! The stereo field feels a bit like it’s being restricted almost like the tracks are in mono and some side chain might’ve been a nice touch as well. I really like that you went with a dnb style as it sets your track apart from a lot of the others (and on top of that it sounds great).

You are totally right. I have to tell you, I struggled a lot, how to put the whole track to the stereo field. I was not sure how should a deal with it. A bit challenging to make a it stereo on the Tracker, but I tried to do it in the mixing phase... that I think not was enough. Do you have any suggestion what should be moved from the center? ^^ A side chain a really good idea! Maybe I will revisit my track to improve a little bit. :D

Thank you very much for your kind words, take care. :)

Sorry for the late reply! This was a bit of a busy with life week for me (I was gone from my computer for a most of the time). You might be able to make it more stereo by exporting each track/stem individually then pan each one or add stereoizing effects like chorus, ping pong delay, stereo wideners, haas, or anything with a spread knob (Kilohearts puts a lot of spread knobs on their effects). I'm not sure what i would recommend to pan as it's hard to judge without messing around and seeing what works but things I could think of are: slightly panning the hi hat to the right or left, maybe a little bit of stereo tremolo to the melody line so it moves (this could become annoying for the listener so it might not work), any background fx that don't have a lot of bass could also be good, and the vinyl crackles

Don't have to apologize. :) Good ideas! I started to mix my old tracks, and I started to add more "life", more stereo for each. I tried to add more reverb to all of it. I don't really satisfied. Maybe a little very soft chorus could be better. I tried to add another layer with pingpong effect for the leads. Maybe it will be better. Thank you, I learned a lot from you. :) Hope I will meet again. :)

Sooo you're the guy I saw on Discord talking about composing with the Polyend ! That's up there with Goldie's Timeless ^^. We used to have so much drum n'bass in our games in the 90's and early 2000, but sadly that trend died away. Glad to see you revive the flame. I also like that melody/synthesizer solo on Runaway01. I only wish I had another dnb banger to listen to.

Developer

I am really pleased with your kind words. ^^ Yeah a really missed those times too! I think the most challenging times for a producer is to create a thing that simple and remarkable too, like simple drum and bass tracks for games. I rewritten the whole track three times, but it worth it. :D Again, thank you, take care. :)

It's a nice tune. I really appreciate how your menu track sets a player up to move right into the action of the game. A lot of opportunity to make a cohesive soundscape.

Maybe it's reflecting my own tastes but I do dig me some drum n bass - your title track kicked. I'm impressed, and it left me wanting more, which is a good thing.

Developer

Thank you really much! I had to tell you this is the a first time I released a dnb track. Most of the time I compose metal, ambient and synthwave like tracks. :)

Well that makes it all the more impressive!

I quite like the ambient soundscapes you have going on in here. The menu theme sounds super relaxing. The DnB tune sounds like it could really help add a feeling of flow in a game.

Developer

Thank you really really much. It's funny when I saw the main theme, that was the only thing that came to my mind for a speed runner game: drum and bass. I am not sure I would like to create a drum and bass track or somehow the picture gave me the idea... you know jungle. :D Anyway, thanks a lot!
