Description
This is my submission for Lone Rabbit's OST Composing Jam 5.

This one was extremely tough for me and I even considered just skipping this one but eventually I managed to create something half decent. MuseScore 4 recently came out and it is supposedly a drastic improvement over MuseScore 3 although I never used MuseScore 3 so I can't really tell you for sure. I decided to try out this new version and try to write something for this jam using entirely different software. It was a difficult process, a pain in the ass as well, it didn't help that I don't know anything about music notation but I'm glad that I was at least able to create and learn something.
I also wish I could've made more than just these three tracks, it feels like the tracks should go on with a new part for all the instruments but they just stop. This is because I just couldn't come up with anything that I was happy with and I also didn't want to create long songs because it was a very difficult process working with MuseScore 4 and I need more experience in order to create complete tracks.

Tracklist:
- A wish: This serves as a Main Title track and sets a tone for the rest of the soundtrack.
- Sailing: This plays when the player is sailing in the game, although this is more for cinematics rather than reacting to player actions.
- Typhoon: The player encounters a dangerous area in the game which requires some intense music.
- An Ocean Under The Stars: This is the final track in which the player has completed the game and their wish has come true. Whatever that may be.

Here's a list of software/applications I used: MuseScore 4 as my daw with the new built-in MuseSounds for the orchestra and I used Kilohearts reverb to add some reverb. I still used FL Studio to create short piano mock-ups.

You may use this soundtrack for your own projects as long as I'm credited appropriately.

That's it.

Message from the artist:
Music notation is hard...

Theme:

Wish upon a star
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
I wrote everything with the theme and picture in mind so it's all based on my thoughts around the theme.

I think even with your hesitation to participate and struggles using a new software, this turned out really well! I enjoyed An Ocean Under the Stars a lot.

Really nice writing and composition especially considering this is your first time using a music notation software! Even though they are only snippets of the tracks you wanted to write they still sound super nice. Looking forward to your next entry when you have more time to get accustomed to Musescore! Great job overall!

These tracks really captured the spirit of adventure on the open sea, great work! I loved the instrumentation, the motion in each piece and the melodies. Nice job!

A Wish: Using a brass ensemble makes this sound like an epic wish! The trade off from the French horn to the trumpet creates a brighter timbre which feels like a change in the wish. This is a very soothing track suitable for a title screen, as you described.

Sailing: I like the evolution of your main leitmotif to be a bit more light-hearted and faster-paced. This suits a sailing theme well. The low drone makes me think that the water is smooth and calm under the ship that’s gliding smoothly across the water.

Typhoon: Intense and chaotic! I like the use of your horizontal sonic space as it feels like I’m spinning around in a whirlpool with the instruments swirling around me!

An Ocean Under the Stars: The stars are sprinkled throughout this track with the use of twinkly glockenspiel. The addition of the trumpets in the background was the icing that made me feel like this was a true concluding piece. I could definitely picture this accompanying an end-game cut-scene where the main character’s wish is granted. This sure doesn’t sound like you are new to Musescore! Overall great job! Thank you for sharing and I wish you the best at getting more music notation practice going forward!

Really enjoyed this! Think Typhoon was my favorite thanks to its turbulent nature that still felt held together musically. I also like that your tracks seem to have their own identity since, I feel, orchestral tracks can off get swept up in a similar aesthetic that you hear over and over. Nice work!

The beginning here, making me feel like I'm about to embark on a perilous journey, but I will do so with courage. With the second track, the journey is obviously all good so far, we stare across the ocean with wonder as we sail peacefully. All of that changes though, as we are threatened to be pulled into the abyss! Fortunately things call down, and coming from near death we can once again appreciate the beauty of the world.

I could definitely seeing MuseScore as a fun way to learn notation, I am clueless there, but you pulled it off well! The  tuned percussion instruments in the fourth song play so nicely with the main instruments, in a seamless and effective way. The rhythm here is nice as well, with full of excitement.

The length of the OST itself is fine for conveying a short little story, and the feelings accompanied with that. In that sense at least, I felt like they were long enough, even Typhoon, since it's quite action-packed. Well done! :)

Thanks a lot for all the kind and helpful words!

I'd say this turned out really well! I like the Sailing theme. Very neat melody, now that time pressure is off maybe you could develop this out some more? Typhoon theme is also short but really cool. Ocean under the stars is beautiful. Any reason why you use MuseScore? I've been doing everything in the FL Studio piano roll so far. Music notation seems like a chore for this, although I do think it is good to learn actual notation.

Thanks for the feedback! It was an absolute chore for sure but I thought I’d challenge myself. I was intrigued by the new version of MuseScore and thought the built-in orchestra sounded nice, better than what I had in FL Studio in my opinion because it has more possibilities with dynamics and articulations so I decided to just go with MuseScore for once. I definitely bit off more than I could chew so I agree with you and I think I’m going to try working on these tracks to make them a bit fuller. Thanks a lot!

Very good!

It's super nice! I didn't expect a pirate/sailing vibe, but you've woven it in masterfully! My favourite song is absolutely the 4th one, it's very nice!

What can I say... Smooth and chill, I like them. For me, they fit the theme. Well done! :D
