Description
Monotone is a fictitious action / horror FPS game, heavily inspired by the plot of the original Half Life, but is based on an underwater facility, rather than Black Mesa. In it, the Protagonist has to escape a degrading research building, before it's trampled by the pressure of the ocean, while shooting various sea monsters that were created in the labs, or teleported through interdimensional travel, on their way out.

Track One, Mainshock, was inspired by something you might hear at an aquarium, but has a slight mysterious and ominous tone. It is suddenly interrupted by an impact, representing the earthquake that destroys parts of the facility. Though the earthquake was actually caused by a space rift from by the facility teleporting sea monsters. The instruments come back, ambiently, through a 100% wet signal shimmer reverb, but not through the master channel, representing the building being pulled underwater, and no longer within safe controlled conditions.

Air Pockets happens after the building is in a lock down security mode, and the protagonist is figuring out their predicament. The instruments from the previous song come back, but they are warped. The woodwinds sound like sirens, and the harp is distorted. Symbolizing that earth has been forever changed.

The Third Track, Do Not Exit the Facility, plays when you enter a restricted area and have the secrets of the laboratory revealed to you. Ghostly strings can vaguely be heard with the same effects used in Mainshock.

After exhausting all other options, its a quick rush to a submarine escape pod (Submarine Escape).

In Surface Tension, you've finally made it out, but you look around to see gigantic, kaiju-like sea monsters roaming the earth. followed by some of smaller humanoid ones you've dealt with before. Looks like you're shooting your way out!

Monotone was a working title that stayed. It refers to the shades of blue underwater, and ambient blue lighting within the game.

How does it fit the theme?
On the surface, the main takeaway is the underwater aesthetic, however, the story also involves extra-terrestrial beings and interdimensional travel. The creatures introduced in this world, are unequal parts malevolent, neutral, and benevolent.

For the purpose of this game, the event in the picture, is a vivid vision the protagonist frequently had as a child, that compelled her to pursue a career in marine biology, given to her by, an assumedly, benevolent force so she would be at the 'right' place, at the 'right' time.

And as the earth starts filling up with alien sea-dwelling newcomers, 'Inside my World', becomes, 'Inside Our World.'

Lol, you should know how surprised I was when I compared your cover art and the soundtrack itself.

Overall, I feel an atmosphere like Black Mesa, only more "broken" and in a more retro style... cool!

Day 5 of Rating Submissions With Few Ratings to Hopefully Get Some In Return

The concept of making a late 90s shooter soundtrack is done wondefully, with authentic sounding ambient pads, skronky industrial leads and pumping drums. I enjoyed how you managed to make the Half Life family sound more acquatic without going outright tropey on it. It is clear that you put thought both into the production and how the story informs the writing and atmosphere of the tracks. 

Maybe a softer track for the vision you´re describing could have tied this together even more?

I love the storytelling within Mainshock! Any kind of music where segments reflect an actual moment in the story always make my brain do a happy dance, haha. I won't repeat your description of the track, but it's executed so perfectly and I can see it all play out as I listen to the music.

Overall, the OST is delightfully atmospheric, giving a wonderful sense of isolation and dread. Mainshock & Surface Tension are my 2 favourites, but the whole thing is one of my favourite submissions that I've listened to so far! I wish I knew how to make stuff like this, haha. I am but a humble noob, but I can dream x3

I love the space you build with Mainshock! I felt like it was a bit shy and wished it was more dramatic with the flute reverb, expanding only the tail end of the flute reverb to expand its distance in the space you built. I like the simple yet effective tension you incorporate into the tracks, I think Submarine Escape has to be my favorite because of this.

Oh hey I actually spotted this entry on YT when browsing before the jam ended.

Really impressed with this. Gives me solid PSX vibes and all in all it fits together really nicely; tightly put together where it needs to be, and appropriately ambient and washed out when the need arises. 

I have to say, this really gives me some old-school MGS1 at points - particularly tracks 2, 3 and 4. Production quality is solid and the compositions as a whole are all congruous to the theme. Great job!
