Judge feedback

Judge feedback is anonymous.

  • It looks nice and runs decent. The arena could be bigger and fullscreen did not work in the tested build. Dmg on the player lacks feedback and all the enemies shoot bullets, even the distinctly melee looking ones. It would be nice if there was a short section to try out the spells first. Personally, I cannot see a lot of "Alchemy" in the build that was presented. It get's clearer while reading the GDD.

STORY
"The legions of Shadow have been released. Just as it was long ago, the one who possesses the Grimoire of the Gunslingers must overcome the all consuming menace of the Shadows by reclaiming the secrets of the grimoire and using the knowledge revealed to overcome the forces that seek to plunge the universe into formless chaos and death. I am that grimoire and I guard existence. Unfortunately for existence, the gunslinger that holds the grimoire is Cage Kblam; the same selfish… person that unleashed the shadows in his doomed attempt to skip the rest of his training and make a grab for power. …or was it to impress his crush? I don’t even know anymore. Cage says a lot of things. Look, I have to save all of existence from a chaotic, hellish fate by somehow wrangling this psychotic little monster into doing the right thing and sealing away the legions of Shadow that he unwittingly freed. I could use some help."

OVERVIEW
Urged on by the sentient grimoire and not given much of a choice, the gunslinger, Cage Kblam, will reluctantly attempt to descend into the realm of the shadows, passing through levels of catacombs and dungeons on their way to confront and seal away the all consuming menace. Using Cage’s skill with a gun and ability to wield powerful magic enhanced by the grimoire, they must overcome the forces opposing them. Along the way, they collect the essences of defeated shadow adversaries and alchemically alter them to bolster their strength and reveal knowledge hidden within the grimoire itself. Should they be defeated, the Grimoire of the Gunslingers will use its abilities to return time to the moment just after the seal was broken and the shadows were released from their captivity. The grimoire and the gunslinger keep their memories; they get stronger; they try again… one of them complains a lot.

INSPIRATION
Inspired by 8-bit Theater, Enter the Gungeon, The Dark Tower series by Stephen King, Wizard with a Gun, Hades, and other fantastic works. Further details in the game design document.

Extra Notes
The prototype is in near minimum viable product state. Bugs and incomplete features should be expected. Thank you to everyone who is making this game jam possible for the opportunity to participate and have someone try my game creation. I learned a great deal, had a lot of fun, and I'm grateful for the experience.

The chargeable attack is AMAZING. I would prefer a bigger map with better thought out obstacles, but otherwise it's a great looking and feeling action game, would love to see it built upon.

Developer

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the charged attack; I want to eventually add a lot more to it, especially knockback and some environmental effects. The map was never intended to be small as it is in the prototype, I just had to focus on getting as many features into the game as I could amidst a lot of life adversity during the game jam and I ran out of time before I could really do any level building. Thanks for playing and the feedback!

The music really complements the action! Now I know what happens if wizards run out of mana :D

Developer

Thanks for playing and the feedback! …and yeah, totally a feature! lol

i like the feel of the game! it’s not very polished right now and that’s fine, i can see all of the systems really working together, although i think there’s a better keyboard layout than the current one, that can all be tested later though, good job :D.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing and for the feedback! I was able to get 3 more versions up before the deadline, so there is a much newer build than the one you tried. The final version has player HP, a loss condition, and several last minute bug fixes. Please do give it another try if you get a chance! Thanks again!

Edit: Regarding the keyboard layout, unfortunately the HTML5 builds using GameMaker would not work with the Left-Shift key to cast, which led to the addition of “C”-to-cast for those that don’t have a middle mouse button.
